This conference textbook is published as the output of the 13th annual Student Scientific Conference held in December 2025. The Student Scientific Conference is a selective course included in the curricula of the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (FF UPJŠ), which has been organized since 2011. Its primary objective is to provide a platform for Bachelor’s and Master’s students to present fragments of their primary research conducted during the preparation of their final theses. The aim of these proceedings is not only to publish these thematically diverse texts but also to demonstrate a commitment to above-standard pedagogical activities and to provide benefit to university studies. This is reflected, on the one hand, in the form of a published output and, on the other, in the motivation it provides for students to actively participate in the event. This year's volume contains twelve texts with a chronological scope ranging from Antiquity to 20th-century history. Thematically, it covers a broad spectrum, from political and economic to cultural history. A specific feature of this volume is the inclusion of four international papers by students from the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw and Charles University in Prague. Their participation in the conference is the result of established cooperation based on the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), which took place in Košice from October 13 to October 17, 2025.

The publication provides a systematic overview of the core models of systemic therapy and its theoretical as well as practical foundations. The opening chapters of the textbook outline the historical development of psychotherapeutic approaches and the shift toward the systemic paradigm, which emphasizes the importance of relationships, context, and circularity in understanding psychological phenomena.

The core of the text focuses on the philosophical foundations of systemic therapy, particularly general systems theory, cybernetics, constructivism, and social constructionism, all of which have significantly shaped the understanding of reality, knowledge, and the therapeutic process. Subsequent chapters address biological and social foundations, including the concepts of autopoiesis, cognition, and communication, and their relevance to the functioning of social systems. The publication further elaborates on the practical implications of these theoretical frameworks, especially in relation to causality, language, and the construction of social reality. Systemic understanding of problems is presented as a dynamic and relational process maintained through interactional patterns within the system.

The textbook entitled Selected Vascular Diseases is intended for medical students and physicians who specialize in internal medicine and angiology. Its goal is to present some lesser-known vascular diseases, or clinical conditions requiring rapid diagnosis. The text analyzes diseases occurring less frequently in clinical practice, such as aortitis, vascular malformations, peripheral arteriovenous malformations, pelvic venous diseases, and Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome. The textbook also addresses conditions that require rapid diagnosis, such as acute mesenteric ischemia and infectious aortitis. Within the scope of vasoneuroses, it describes Raynaud's phenomenon and childhood vascular diseases, such as hemangiomas. The text also touches on late complications associated with arteriovenous shunts in patients treated with hemodialysis.

The authors address the current view on the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus, while the following sections are devoted to classification, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and epidemiology of diabetes. The work provides insights into outpatient therapeutic management of patients by specialists and during hospitalisation for acute complications of diabetes, taking into account the latest recommendations from the last two years. Separate chapters are devoted to the management of associated and concomitant diseases, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, or complications of diabetes, including cardiovascular complications, neuropathy, nephropathy, and ocular complications. The work also discusses the issue of diabetes mellitus in pregnancy, including gestational diabetes mellitus. A special chapter, written by a co-author, is devoted to the issue of osteoporosis in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Okrúhle číslo Doktorandských miscelaneí nás vyzýva na krátke bilancovanie. V desiatich zväzkoch zborníka sme uverejnili spolu 116 príspevkov zo siedmich doktorandských študijných odborov. V každom čísle boli zastúpené štúdie z literárnej vedy (v prvých šiestich zväzkoch bol pre interdisciplinárne filologické štúdie používaný názov literárna veda/slovakistika). Z ostatných odborov boli najčastejšie uverejňované texty z filozofie a sociálnej práce, pričom štúdie z filozofie chýbali iba v posledných dvoch zväzkoch a štúdie zo sociálnej práce v prvých dvoch a v siedmom zväzku.

V zborníku sa snažíme udržiavať prvotnú myšlienku, ktorou bolo kultivovať domáci výskumný priestor najmladšej generácie bádateľov v interdisciplinárnom dialógu, čo si vyžaduje dosahovanie medzinárodných štandardov kvality, no na druhej strane aj zachovanie identity zborníka ako jedinečnej domácej publikačnej platformy.

Učebnica poskytuje komplexný a interdisciplinárny pohľad na problematiku humánnej výživy v kontexte verejného zdravotníctva, hygieny výživy a prevencie ochorení. Je koncipovaná ako základný aj rozširujúci študijný materiál pre študentov zdravotníckych, biomedicínskych a verejno-zdravotníckych odborov, ako aj pre odborníkov pôsobiacich v oblasti výživy, hygieny, potravinárstva a zdravotnej politiky. Publikácia systematicky pokrýva všetky kľúčové oblasti výživy človeka – od základných zložiek potravy (bielkoviny, sacharidy, tuky, vitamíny, minerálne látky), ich biologickej a energetickej hodnoty, cez odporúčané výživové dávky a tvorbu racionálneho jedálnička, až po hodnotenie nutričného stavu populácie. Učebnica reflektuje aktuálne trendy v stravovaní vrátane alternatívnych spôsobov výživy, prerušovaného pôstu, vysokoproteínových diét a konzumácie spracovaných a ultraprocesovaných potravín, pričom ich hodnotí z hľadiska vedeckých dôkazov, zdravotných prínosov aj rizík. Dôležitou súčasťou je problematika cudzorodých látok v potravinách, potravinárskych aditív a legislatívnych rámcov ich používania, ako aj význam pitnej vody, jej kvalita, úprava a zdravotné riziká spojené s kontamináciou. Publikácia sa venuje aj špecifickým oblastiam, ako sú alimentárne nákazy, výživa v jednotlivých vývinových obdobiach detí, nemocničné stravovanie a diétne systémy.

Praktickú hodnotu učebnice zvyšuje zaradenie metodicky spracovanej praktickej časti zameranej na mikrobiologické hodnotenie pokrmov rýchleho občerstvenia, založenej na reálnych dátach regionálnych úradov verejného zdravotníctva. Monografia predstavuje pokus o vyrovnanie sa s uchopením problému Heidegger a metafyzika v kritickej konfrontácii s jeho najvýznamnejšími filozofickými súčasníkmi v chápaní a riešení daného problému. V prvom rade ide o snahu vyrovnať sa s otázkou metafyziky ako filozofického problému vo vlastnej Heideggerovej tvorbe tak, aby čitateľ mal možnosť najprv sa zoznámiť s jeho vlastným riešením tejto otázky v priereze celej jeho tvorby. The aim of this university textbook is to provide a systematically structured teaching text focused on research in health sciences and, at the same time, to offer a practical methodological manual for writing final theses intended for students of medical and non-medical fields of study. The first chapter introduces the topic, maps the historical development of research in medical and non-medical sciences, and explains the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the context of research activities. It also highlights the importance of research for these fields and describes the individual steps, principles, and methodological procedures of scientific work. The second chapter focuses on the basic attributes of research in health sciences, with an emphasis on key definitions, basic research designs, the typology of scientific studies, and the possibilities for using the relevant methodologies. It also includes the interpretation and analytical processing of quantitative data, while the third chapter analogously elaborates on the qualitative research approach. The fourth chapter is devoted to the ethical aspects of scientific research. The fifth chapter focuses on the evaluation of research papers in terms of their quality, structure, content coherence, reliability, and validity. The final sixth chapter provides methodological guidelines for planning, implementing, and processing individual types of final theses, with the aim of offering students practical and clearly structured instructions for their preparation. The publication also includes questions, tasks, and exercises that supplement theoretical knowledge with practical examples. These cases are intended to develop students' ability to design research studies and methodologically correctly prepare final theses.

Kolektívna monografia Leško, V. – Róbert Stojka a kol.: Heidegger, metafyzika a Gréci (Košice: UPJŠ 2016, 695 s.) je prvým historicko-filozofickým pokusom na Slovensku, ale aj v širších zahraničných kontextoch, vysporiadať sa s takto zvolenou ústrednou témou Heideggerovho diela. Práca je členená do troch základných časti. V prvej, ktorá je nazvaná od Augustína k Aristotelovi, autori jednotlivých kapitol skúmajú genézu Heideggerovho vzťahu ku gréckej filozofii a skúmanie hlavnej Heideggerovej otázky – otázky bytia - od jeho prvých prednáškových kurzov k Aristotelovej filozofii z rokov 1921/1922 až do roku 1929, keď mu vychádza práca k Aristotelovej Metafyzike. Naše skúmanie jednoznačne potvrdzuje skutočnosť, že v týchto Heideggerových raných textov (prednáškových cyklov) sa postupne rodia všetky dôležité filozofické pozície, ktoré mali svoje zavŕšenie v práci Bytie a čas.

After several years of teaching experience in the compulsory subject of histology and histological techniques, it became clear that there was a need to refine, standardize, and facilitate the study of bachelor's degree students. We therefore decided to develop university textbooks for the theory of general histology in bachelor's degree programs: Laboratory Examination Methods in Healthcare, Physiotherapy, and Nursing. The new textbooks are based on the syllabi for the subjects "Histology and Pathology" and "Fundamentals of Histology" for the given study programs. The content is designed to make the study of histology as easy as possible and to help students quickly orient themselves in the given topic. At the same time, the texts aim to streamline cooperation between students and teachers in lectures and practical exercises, emphasizing the important structures of individual cell and tissue types in light microscope images, which is the primary goal and task of general histology.

In the context of the deteriorating state of adolescent mental health, it is extremely important to optimize the existing mental health care system in Slovakia. There is still little comprehensive and coherent information about the functioning of the system and the process of providing assistance within professional care, its shortcomings or suggestions for improvement. This is not possible without a deep knowledge of the perspective and experiences of adolescents with mental problems themselves. The aim of this publication is therefore to present adolescents' views on the professional assistance provided as a result of experienced mental problems within the existing care system in Slovakia.

The findings from a qualitative study that focused on the views of young people themselves are presented. The chapters of the monograph capture their views on the perception of mental health problems in society, their experiences with identifying emerging problems and seeking professional help, and their experiences with the care process itself and its forms. They also capture their overall experience with both care and care providers, as well as with leaving care and its impacts in various areas. Finally, a view is presented of possible recommendations that could improve the mental health care provided from the adolescents' perspective.

This publication is intended primarily for all professionals working with adolescents with mental health problems in all branches of care, teachers and other educational staff who are in contact with them every day at school, and last but not least, all competent policy makers who care about the mental health of adolescents and have the power to improve the care provided to them.

The publication "Fundamentals of Cardiovascular Risk Assessment: Tools and Applications" is the first of its kind in Slovakia. It was created with the aim of providing healthcare professionals, medical students, and anyone interested in the subject with a clear, practical overview of cardiovascular risk. The book presents a global and national picture of mortality, emphasizes the importance of prevention and screening, and introduces the basic principles of risk assessment. Special attention is paid to risk factors and modifiers that can significantly change a patient's prognosis. For a better understanding of the issue, the reader will also find chapters devoted to clinical conditions, an overview of scoring systems, risk categories, and finally practical examples from clinical practice that link theory with everyday medical reality. Our goal is for this book to be not only an educational tool, but also a practical guide for decision-making in clinical practice. Každý človek má potreby – od tých najzákladnejších, ako je jedlo a bezpečie, až po potrebu lásky, uznania a sebarealizácie, teda rozvoja svojho potenciálu. Tieto potreby boli zoradené do tzv. Maslowovej pyramídy, kde na seba nadväzujú podľa toho, ako veľmi sú pre náš život nevyhnutné. Ak máme uspokojené základné potreby, začneme túžiť po tých vyšších – napríklad po blízkych vzťahoch, spolupatričnosti, rešpekte a možnosti rozvíjať sa.

Ľudia so zdravotným znevýhodnením majú rovnaké potreby ako ktokoľvek iný. Rozdiel je často len v tom, že ich naplnenie je pre nich náročnejšie – nie preto, že by ich menej chceli, ale preto, že im v tom často bránia vonkajšie prekážky. Chýbajúca podpora, bariéry v prostredí, nedostatok informácií či predsudky spoločnosti spôsobujú, že sa na ich potreby zabúda. Niektoré potreby sa potom stávajú „neviditeľné“ – nie preto, že by neexistovali, ale preto, že ich okolie nevníma.

Sociálne potreby, ako je láska, priateľské vzťahy, pocit spolupatričnosti, možnosť komunikovať a byť súčasťou komunity, sú pre ľudí kľúčové. Ak nie sú naplnené, vznikajú pocity samoty, smútku, bezmocnosti či frustrácie. Z výskumov vieme, že osamelosť alebo pocit odmietnutia môže bolieť rovnako ako fyzická bolesť. O to dôležitejšie je vnímať, že každý z nás túži po tom istom – po prijatí, rešpekte, priateľstve, láske.

The monograph offers a comprehensive perspective on the theoretical, methodological, and empirical dimensions of participatory visual research within the field of social work. It is grounded in the understanding that social work plays a crucial role in amplifying the voices of vulnerable groups and promoting social justice, with particular attention paid to persons with disabilities who frequently encounter limited opportunities for participation as well as persistent social, communicative, and environmental barriers. The author analyses the concept of participation in alignment with the principle of “Nothing about us without us” and presents the PhotoVoice method as an interdisciplinary tool that integrates participatory action research, critical pedagogy, feminist epistemologies, and documentary photography. The method is understood not only as a research technique but also as a form of visual advocacy, enabling participants to articulate their experiences, needs, and perspectives in ways accessible to both professional audiences and the wider public. The monograph reflects on the development of PhotoVoice in international scholarship and highlights its potential to transcend traditional academic boundaries toward participatory and transformative practice in social work. The empirical section comprises three projects conducted by the author in the Slovak context, focusing on diverse groups of persons with disabilities and their families, who face specific social needs and everyday barriers. The findings demonstrate the potential of PhotoVoice to strengthen participation through accessible and meaningful visual tools. The monograph also addresses methodological, ethical, and terminological considerations and adopts an inclusive understanding of disability consistent with contemporary approaches in social work.

The submitted publication entitled Voľby 2023/2024: výsledky – hodnotenia – dôsledky reflects a wide range of topics related to the electoral processes that took place in 2023 and 2024 in Slovakia and abroad. The publication deals with both the evaluation of the currently valid electoral legislation, including proposals for its further improvement, and the broader socio-political consequences of the elections in connection with democratization and integration processes. The submitted publication is published as an output of the VEGA project No. 1/0474/24 Audit of Slovak electoral and referendum legislation, the project leader of which is prof. JUDr. Ladislav Orosz, CSc. from the Faculty of Law of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice and in which the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice also participates. The authors of the individual contributions analyze all types of elections, from municipal and regional, through parliamentary and presidential, to elections to the European Parliament. While some authors focused primarily on the local or regional level, others chose an approach focused on the national or supranational level, and the geographical scope of the cases examined was extremely diverse.

Both clinical and radiation oncology are the most developing parts of medicine. Regardless of the physician´s specialization, all of them will have to face subjects with cancer in their daily clinical practice. It includes not only the treatment itself, but also obtaining the diagnosis, but also differential diagnosis and treatment of different adverse events caused by oncological treatment. This publication provides basic data about tumor characteristics necessary for oncologists to determine the final stage and choose the best treatment strategy. In addition, explains the basic oncological terms, forms of therapy, and provides information about treatment timing, combination strategies and expected outcomes. It explains main endpoints of clinical trials performed in oncology to understand them.  In the second part this publication describes mechanism of action of all treatment modalities used in clinical oncology, provides information about potential side effects and basic knowledge how to deal with them. The last chapter is focused on palliative care, how to relieve symptoms of dying patient and how to deal with cancer-related pain.

The script deals with the issue of harmful alcohol use and its consequences on individuals’ cognitive abilities. The first part is devoted to the diagnosis of dependence syndrome and the assessment of risky drinking according to internationally recognized classifications (ICD, DSM). The following chapters explain the concept of cognition and its main components. Attention is also given to changes in cognitive functions during long-term alcohol abuse. The reader is introduced to the anatomical changes in the brain caused by alcohol. Damage to white matter and disorders of neurotransmission are described. Special focus is placed on diagnoses associated with alcohol use, such as Korsakoff syndrome, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, demyelinating disorders, and hepatic encephalopathy. Attention is also paid to the possibilities of diagnosing cognitive dysfunction. General screening tests such as MMSE or MoCA are presented. More specific tools, such as PHES or BEARNI, are described in greater detail. The script also points out the possibilities of pharmacological treatment. Non-pharmacological approaches, including cognitive remediation therapy and computer-based training, are also discussed. The conclusion is devoted to modern neuromodulation methods, in particular transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation. This university textbook is primarily intended for students of medicine, psychology, and related health sciences.
