Forensic medicine is a fundamental medical discipline that deals with determining the cause of death in cases of violent and non-violent deaths, as well as investigating and assessing the effects of violence on the human body, including in cases involving living persons. This textbook provides a comprehensive and complex overview of the basic tasks and theoretical knowledge of forensic medicine. Its aim is to provide a theoretical basis in the form of images of morphological autopsy findings for the study of the compulsory subject Forensic Medicine and Medical Law in the study programs General Medicine and Dentistry. The author emphasizes the need to know the basics of forensic medicine in every medical field and to take a multidisciplinary approach when clarifying medical-legal issues.

The presented annotated source edition represents the first systematic attempt to process selected documents related to the history of personal automobilism in Slovakia during the interwar period. It addresses a notable research and publication gap in Slovak historiography, where the topic of automobilism has long remained marginal. Although research in this field has progressed over the last two decades, Slovak scholarship still lags behind Czech historiography. The main ambition of the edition is to present a broad selection of sources to highlight key thematic lines in the development of personal automobilism. The sources are divided into two main thematic groups: economic-legislative issues and cultural-social dimensions. Special attention is given to car accessibility, infrastructure, legal frameworks, visual advertising, and the activities of motoring associations. The typologically diverse corpus includes archival records, printed materials, visual sources, and photographs. The edition builds on a 2017 authorial monograph, expanding it with new insights and sources. It draws from collections housed in the National Archives in Prague, the Slovak National Archive, and various regional archives. The work also benefits from the application of modern methodological approaches, such as Business History and cultural history. The project was carried out under the scientific grant VVGS-2022-2431 at the Faculty of Arts, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. Its results are closely linked to the teaching activities of the research team. The edition is the result of several stages – from heuristics, selection, and processing to peer review and publication. The publication contributes to a vivid understanding of the historical aspects of automobilism and expands knowledge of modernization processes in Slovakia. It also offers potential for use in educational practice and further academic research.

Demencia je jednou z naliehavých a mimoriadne zložitých globálnych výziev pre zdravotnícke a sociálne systémy 21. storočia. Na Slovensku sa počet osôb s demenciou odhaduje na 62 495 (2018), pričom sa predpokladá, že v roku 2040 tento počet vzrastie na 180 000. Demencie zatiaľ patria k nevyliečiteľným chronickým stavom, ktorým nie je možné úplne predchádzať. V roku 2024 (Livingston a kol.) bol publikovaný aktualizovaný model tzv. potenciálne ovplyvniteľných faktorov, ktoré môžu prispieť k zvýšenému riziku demencie. Patria k nim: nízka úroveň vzdelania, strata sluchu, vysoký LDL cholesterol, depresia, úrazové poranenie mozgu, fyzická nečinnosť, diabetes mellitus, fajčenie, vysoký krvný tlak, obezita, nadmerná konzumácia alkoholu, sociálna izolácia, znečistené ovzdušie (vrátane pasívneho fajčenia) a strata zraku. Týchto 14 rizikových faktorov predstavuje približne 45 % celosvetových demencií, ktorým by sa teoreticky dalo predísť. Napriek narastajúcej dostupnosti informácií, úroveň povedomia verejnosti o preventívnych prístupoch v správaní sa k sebe samým, ktoré môžu nástup demencie významne oddialiť, zostáva nízka. Farmaceuti na Slovensku majú v súčasnosti adekvátne kompetencie, aby vedeli pomôcť aj v oblasti prevencie demencií. Niekedy stačí poradenstvo priamo v lekárni, vo vážnejších prípadoch odporúčanie navštíviť lekára pre ďalšie posúdenie zdravotného stavu. Každopádne, človek takto nezostáva so svojim problémom sám a dostane včasnú a potrebnú zdravotnú starostlivosť.

Slovakia has one of the highest mortality rates from preventable and treatable causes. The latest data also shows that within the EU, we have the highest mortality rate from cancer. A person's health is influenced by a combination of genetics, different life circumstances, and personal decisions. While we do not have control over all of these factors, proper eating habits, regular physical activity, and quality sleep can significantly contribute to preventing health problems and chronic diseases. However, many people face barriers such as financial constraints, work overload, or a lack of reliable information and knowledge. In Slovakia, almost half of the population cannot afford to purchase nutritious food, which makes the situation even more difficult. Therefore, we have prepared a practical guide with simple, affordable, and time-efficient recommendations aimed at improving health and quality of life. The textbook provides a clear view of the importance of respiratory care, with an emphasis on prevention and treatment procedures. The introductory chapters present the anatomical and physiological principles of respiratory function necessary for understanding further contexts of the issue. Methods for facilitating expectoration of mucus and foreign bodies are explained. Great emphasis is placed on correct procedures for humidifying and warming the inhaled mixture, including the basics of aerosol therapy. This is an issue that is particularly important in invasive, but also non-invasive methods of ventilation therapy. Výučbový materiál môže poslúžiť nielen ako príprava k praktickým cvičeniam so simulátorom Cardiology Patient Simulator „K“ ver 2 (Kyoto Kagaku), ale aj ako užitočná pomôcka pre študentov počas praktických cvičení pri lôžku pacienta. Študenti v publikácii nájdu okrem detailného opisu auskultačných nálezov na jednotlivých chlopniach aj podrobne vysvetlenú ich klinickú manifestáciu u pacienta pri fyzikálnom vyšetrení. Samozrejmou súčasťou sú EKG a echokardiografické nálezy a v neposlednom rade aj možnosť manažmentu jednotlivých chlopňových chýb podľa najnovších odporúčaní Európskej kardiologickej spoločnosti. The proceedings consist of 12 contributions in Slovak, English, and Czech. The authors primarily addressed selected current issues from the international environment in the context of deteriorating international relations and global security.

The topics of the contributions mainly include questions of international security (for example, in Germany or Hungary), environmental issues and the fight against the climate crisis. Furthermore, the proceedings include topics such as the European Parliament elections, selected narratives related to the war in Ukraine, migration to Europe and its security aspects, self-reflection of the European political system, and public space and public discourse. Počet ľudí so zdravotným znevýhodnením neustále rastie, čo predstavuje výzvu aj pre oblasť sociálnej práce. Tá zohráva kľúčovú úlohu v podpore týchto osôb a hľadaní efektívnych spôsobov napĺňania ich potrieb.

Vysokoškolská učebnica vznikla v rámci riešenia projektu KEGA č. 018UPJŠ-4/2024 s názvom „PhotoVoice ako inovatívna metóda advokácie sociálnych potrieb ľudí so sluchovým postihnutím“. Je prvou časťou viacdielneho cyklu, ktorý sa venuje rôznym aspektom tejto problematiky. Učebnica analyzuje historické a teoretické východiská, terminológiu a modely zdravotného znevýhodnenia. Venuje sa špecifikám vybraných druhov zmyslového znevýhodnenia. Osobitná pozornosť sa upriamuje na sociálne potreby týchto osôb a advokácii v sociálnej práci, pričom zdôraznený je význam aktívneho zapojenia ľudí so zdravotným znevýhodnením do riešenia vlastných životných situácií.

Okrem poskytovania odborných poznatkov môže učebnica slúžiť aj ako podnet na hlbšiu reflexiu vlastného prístupu k ľuďom so zdravotným znevýhodnením a na rozvoj citlivého prístupu k ľuďom so zdravotným znevýhodnením. Navyše, učebnica obsahuje vybrané prvky tzv. jasnej tlače, čím podporuje jej prístupnosť.

Overweight as a risk factor for the development of civilization diseases and urogenital dysfunctions

Overweight and obesity represent a significant risk factor for the development of several diseases of civilisation, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and various forms of cancer. They also contribute significantly to urogenital dysfunctions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and pelvic organ prolapse. Mechanisms that link excess weight to these dysfunctions include increased intra-abdominal pressure, hormonal changes, and chronic inflammatory processes that negatively affect the structure and function of the urogenital system. Prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity are therefore crucial not only in terms of reducing the risk of civilization diseases, but also in improving the quality of life through the prevention and treatment of urogenital dysfunctions.

Kniha je slovenským prekladom anglickej monografie Stevena J. Lucka An Introduction to Event-Related Potential Technique (2014). Technika potenciálov, ktoré súvisia s udalosťami (ERP), je neinvazívny spôsob skúmania procesov percepcie a kognície ľudského mozgu. Subjekty – skúmané osoby, vnímajú špeciálne navrhnuté formy vizuálnych alebo rečových stimulov. Zo snímanej sústavy EEG signálov sa matematickými metódami extrahujú osobitné ERP signály, pričom sú u nich zaujímavé tri typy rozlišovacích schopností: časové rozlíšenie (latencia), amplitúdové rozlíšenie (magnitúda) a priestorové rozlíšenie (oblasť mozgu), v ktorej sa generujú ERP signály. Latencia a magnitúda signálov sú v tejto metóde unikátne parametre prezentujúce uvedené procesy, priestorové rozlíšenie je v tomto prípade menej dokonalé.

V knihe je výklad celého experimentálneho ERP výskumu: návrh a prevádzka laboratória, dizajn experimentov, akvizícia EEG signálov a korekcia šumov a artefaktov. Nasleduje detekcia ERP signálov: filtrovanie a Fourierova analýza, kvantifikácia amplitúd a latencií, osobitné metódy v časovej aj frekvenčnej doméne a podobne. Nakoniec štatistickou analýzou a interpretačnými metódami sa formulujú dosiahnuté výsledky výskumu. Pre čitateľa sú cenné aj poznatky v kapitole o tom, ako sa píšu štúdie s dobrým kreditným ohodnotením a ako sa takéto štúdie oponujú.

Kniha je cenným zdrojom pre výskumných pracovníkov, pre doktorandov a postdoktorandov, ale aj pre študentov, ktorých zaujala nesmierne zložitá a málo preskúmaná činnosť ľudského mozgu.

Despite the fact that a psychologist may have a good moral background, it is necessary for everyone to know and act in accordance with ethical professional principles in order not to harm the clients with whom they work in the course of psychological practice. There are many case studies in the professional literature that describe serious situations of violations of psychological ethics. On the one hand, they depict conscious professional misconduct or ignorance. On the other hand, they have contributed to the introduction of even legal standards for the ethical behavior of psychologists as professionals. Completion of a course or training in the topic of psychological ethics is required by several professional associations abroad, especially in the last years of undergraduate studies. Their goal is to supervise the quality and preparation of future psychologists. The university textbook Do I Have It or Not: Ethics in Psychological Practice provides a summary of essential information on the ethics of conducting psychological practice, the boundaries of the relationship with the client, and the rules of confidentiality. The goal is not for the student, as a future psychologist, to know ethical rules word for word, but for them to be sufficiently ethically sensitive.

This academic textbook is addressed to students of English linguistics as an introductory course on syntax, but also to anyone interested in the composition of the English sentence, whether affiliated with academia, school teachers or practising translators. The textbook pursues the Prague Linguistic School tradition of functional structuralism along with an onomasiological perspective as the major methodological focus of the Košice Onomasiological School of Linguistics. Within an onomasiological approach to syntactic analysis the key to the identification of surface structures (ranked as Phrases, Clauses, and Sentences on the syntactic pyramid) is the syntactic meaning (a frame-to-chain approach). The syntactic analysis starts with identification of the arrangement of semantic roles (a deep valency frame) and proceeds to determine a surface valency chain, often several of them, by means of surface grammatical and structural tests. Readers are encouraged to use their intuitions in deciphering the syntactic meaning and identifying the surface chain capable of its activation in both the English sentence analysis as well as cross-linguistically.

Vedecká monografia Kozmológia čarodejných príbehov (ľudová rozprávka medzi kultúrou a umením) je pôvodnou prácou syntetizujúcou výskum o kozmologických štruktúrach archaických epických žánrov v interdisciplinárnom dialógu medzi literárnou vedou a kultúrnou antropológiou. Výskumne sa sústredíme najmä na ľudovú čarodejnú rozprávku, ktorá sa vždy dotýka základnej ontologickej problematiky, vytvára modelový a poetizovaný obraz sveta; predstavuje neteistickú formu hrdinskej kozmológie, ukotvenú v gnómickom časopriestorovom rámci. Pri jej výskume kombinujeme synchrónnu systémovú interpretáciu semiotických rovín s diachrónnou analýzou vývoja kultúr. Z nášho výskumu vyplýva, že základné konflikty medzi symbolickými formami čarodejných príbehov, tak ako ich poznáme z folklórneho prostredia, vykryštalizovali v epoche šírenia sa prvých historických národov ako dôsledok konfrontácie odlišných kultúrnych komplexov.
