The university textbook "Databases in MS Access – accompanying texts for practical exercises" is intended for medical students, students of non-technical universities, and all beginners in working with databases. It introduces the reader to the issues of database processing and explains the basic principles that need to be known when creating relational databases. It is therefore suitable for those who have not yet worked with databases or who are considering managing their data using their own database. However, even more experienced computer users can find useful information here. This university textbook is written in such a way that its content can be mastered with basic knowledge of working with computers and programs running in any version of the MS Windows operating system.

Skriptá sú určené pre zahraničných študentov Lekárskej fakulty UPJŠ v Košiciach, a sú písané v anglickom jazyku.
Laparoskopická chirurgia dnes predstavuje štandardnú a v mnohých ohľadoch preferovanú modalitu chirurgickej liečby. Dynamika jej celosvetového rozšírenia, umožnená pokrokom v biomedicínskych technológiách a rozvojom globálnych informačných a komunikačných kanálov, nemá v histórii chirurgie obdobu. V súčasnosti už prakticky neexistuje žiadna brušná operácia, ktorá by sa nevykonávala laparoskopickým spôsobom, pričom v mnohých prípadoch je už laparoskopický postup metódou voľby.
Napriek, a možno práve vďaka bezprecedentne rýchlej penetrácii laparoskopických operácií do každodennej chirurgickej praxe naďalej v mnohých ohľadoch absentujú všeobecne akceptované technické štandardy. Vysoká variabilita procesných postupov v rámci jednotlivých laparoskopických operácií vychádza skôr zo zvyklostí daného pracoviska ako z medicíny založenej na dôkazoch. Táto situácia je ďalej modifi kovaná rozvojom nových a staronových koncepcií charakteru minilaparoskopie, SILS či NOTES a ich hybridných kombinácií s klasickou laparoskopiou.
Cieľom monografi e je pritiahnuť pozornosť odbornej verejnosti späť k základným princípom laparoskopickej chirurgie, ktoré by mali byť základňou pre efektívne a bezpečné vykonávanie laparoskopických operácií, ako aj bázou pre kritický postoj k módnym inovatívnym trendom. Obsahovo sa sústredí skôr na všeobecne menej známe a v našich podmienkach zriedkavo diskutované témy, ktorých význam sa hlbšie analyzoval len v nedávnej minulosti. Našou ambíciou bolo vytvoriť vyvážený materiál, ktorý by bol zaujímavým primárnym informačným zdrojom nielen pre lekárov špecialistov, ale aj pre poslucháčov lekárskych fakúlt a kolegov v špecializačnej príprave v chirurgických odboroch.

Adekvátne vedomosti z lekárskej fyziológie sú dôležité pre správne porozumenie funkcií jednotlivých orgánových systémov, ako aj pre diagnostiku a správnu liečbu ochorení. Vysokoškolský učebný text Praktické cvičenia z fyziológie je navrhnutý tak, aby dopĺňal prednášky a semináre z Lekárskej fyziológie. Každá kapitola je rozdelená do niekoľkých častí (Úvod, Princíp, Materiál, Postup, Protokol), aby študentom uľahčila porozumenie jednotlivých tém a bola nápomocná pri vypracovávaní laboratórnych protokolov. Jednotlivé kapitoly zahŕňajú ochranu a bezpečnosť pri práci, úvod do fyziológie, hematológiu, kardiovaskulárny systém, respiračný systém a vylučovací systém. Od študentov sa očakáva, že počas praktických cvičení získajú praktické skúsenosti pri riešení jednotlivých úloh zameraných na oblasť lekárskej fyziológie a budú rozvíjať aj dôležité analytické a komunikačné zručnosti, ktoré im pomôžu analyzovať a prezentovať vedecké dáta.

Progress in biology and medicine has always been significantly related to advances in physics. Not only has physics supplied instruments and methods of measurement that have led to many discoveries in physiology and medicine, but methods of physical research have changed many of the older approaches to the biologic sciences. Such circumstances have even led to development of a new scientific field: biophysics, which uses to a great extent physical instrumentation procedures applied to an experimental system. Because any instrument is an additional factor in any experimental system, it may affect the data. To interpret physical data on biological material correctly then, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of instrument response.
A practical course enables a student to acquire some skills, experience and methodological knowledge for performance of experiments and evaluation of measured data. Due to the fast development of instrumentation technology, it is not possible to teach every operation and procedure upon instruments we may use in a future. Besides the basic physical principles, the aim of a practical course is to point out some general rules and skills for instrument operation and for the interpretation of the measured values derived from such operation.
There are two kinds of lessons in practical courses. The first one focuses on laboratory measurements of some important physical quantities and the evaluation of the measured data. These measured quantities are components of the subject “medical biophysics” or of the phenomena studied. Experience provided in managing various scales and tables, as well as in the construction of tables and graphs is substantial. Lessons also enable students to repeat and to strengthen their knowledge of secondary school physics, which is useful for understanding of many phenomena studied in medical biophysics. The second kind of lesson provides experience with some of the diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments, which can be seen in practical medicine.
The understanding of basic physical principles of corresponding instruments is both recommended and demanded. Theoretical preparation is not only an appropriate condition for the practical managing of the whole lesson, but also helps to avoid injury. This textbook, therefore, intends to help students in preparing for both the practical lessons and the final exam.

Vysokoškolský učebný text Chlopňové chyby je prvou slovenskou publikáciou, ktorá sa venuje využitiu simulátorovej medicíny vo výučbe auskultácie srdca. Cieľom publikácie bolo skvalitnenie štúdia vnútorného lekárstva využitím kardiologického simulátora, ktorým disponuje Centrum simulátorovej a virtuálnej medicíny (CSVM) na Lekárskej fakulte UPJŠ. Výučbový materiál môže poslúžiť nielen ako príprava k praktickým cvičeniam so simulátorom Cardiology Patient Simulator „K“ ver 2 (Kyoto Kagaku), ale aj ako užitočná pomôcka pre študentov počas praktických cvičení pri lôžku pacienta. Študenti v publikácii nájdu okrem detailného opisu auskultačných nálezov na jednotlivých chlopniach aj podrobne vysvetlenú ich klinickú manifestáciu u pacienta pri fyzikálnom vyšetrení. Samozrejmou súčasťou sú EKG a echokardiografické nálezy a v neposlednom rade aj možnosť manažmentu jednotlivých chlopňových chýb podľa najnovších odporúčaní Európskej kardiologickej spoločnosti. Využitie publikácie je pre študentov medicíny od internej propedeutiky (3. ročník) až po záverečné štátnicové skúšky.

The history of ethics represents the search for a fundamental principle that would enable a person to distinguish between moral and immoral, good and evil, or right and wrong. The main issues are the motives, methods, and consequences of human actions.
The integrity of the medical profession emphasizes lifelong study and practice according to professional competence, and, last but not least, adherence to ethical principles and standards of medical ethics. Medical ethics and the related communication in the process of providing healthcare are becoming increasingly relevant topics. Communication between doctor and patient itself constitutes a very important part of the diagnostic process and treatment; it significantly contributes to the creation of a mutual relationship and, to a considerable extent, ensures patient cooperation.
The development of various information and network technologies allows for rapid communication even in medicine; however, a kind word and real contact with the patient, with an appropriate choice of verbal and nonverbal communication tools in personal contact, cannot be replaced by modern technology. The present era places demands on certain communication skills of the physician. Another ethical and legal issue is informed consent, which brings the patient’s active participation in the process of providing healthcare.
The presented publication provides basic information about medical ethics, communication in medicine in general, and communication skills in medical practice. Further chapters are devoted to the issue of informed consent, ethics, and the specifics of communication with selected groups of patients. We believe that this publication will clarify for the reader the basic ethical pillars and will be helpful for basic orientation in the issues of medical communication.

Táto učebnica je určená pre zahraničných študentov medicíny – začiatočníkov – ako slovenčina na špecifický účel výučby. Jej cieľom je pomôcť zahraničným študentom, ktorí (1) študujú medicínu (2) v cudzom jazyku (anglický jazyk) a (3) v zahraničí (Slovensko) zvládnuť výzvu pri príprave na praktickú časť ich štúdia – konverzácia s pacientom v Slovenskom jazyku.Zámerom je poskytnúť študentom krok za krokom najfrekventovanejšie slovné spojenia a výrazy potrebné pri komunikácii s pacientom. Lekcie sa zameriavajú hlavne na slovnú zásobu týkajúcu sa častí ľudského tela a na základné symptómy a príznaky chorôb.Dôraz je kladený na krátke dialógy medzi lekárom a pacientom. Pri precvičovaní dialógov sú študenti vedení k nácviku komunikácie so zreteľom na porozumenie, bez prípadných obáv o gramatickú správnosť. Gramatické javy sú predstavované postupne, cez jednoduché pomôcky – „tipy“.V prípade potreby si môžu študenti nájsť a doplniť si „chýbajúce časti gramatiky“ prostredníctvom odkazov na odporúčanú literatúru. Cieľom tejto knihy je uľahčiť a zefektívniť celý proces štúdia/osvojenia si (lekárskej) slovenčiny.

This publication is intended for medical students and offers a systematic overview of anemia from the perspective of clinical practice. The publication includes a classification of anemias based on pathophysiological mechanisms, including impaired red blood cell production, increased destruction and blood loss. It provides detailed description of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, as well as aplastic and hemolytic anemias, including some of the rare hereditary forms. The text features chapters on laboratory diagnostics, investigative methods, and interpretation of results. The publication is focused on clinical presentation, differential diagnostic approach, and the basic principles of treatment for each type of anemia. The material is supplemented with images and tables to help in the understanding of this complex topic. Učebné texty Psychológia v medicíne prezentujú základné poznatky o správaní sa a prežívaní človeka nielen v chorobe, približujú psychodiagnostické postupy a psychoterapeutickú liečbu pacientov. Podstatnou súčasťou práce je kapitola, ktorá pojednáva o lekárskej psychológii. Táto časť práce poukazuje na význam komunikácie a interakcie medzi lekárom a pacientom a nutnosť zohľadnenia významných vzťahových aspektov medzi nimi. Kapitola sa ďalej venuje psychosomatickému rozmeru vybraných chorôb v kontexte rôznych medicínskych odborov. Zároveň je analyzovaná psychologická problematika pacientov s telesným, zmyslovým postihnutím a duševne zaostalých osôb, záver učebnice predstavuje opis špecifík práce s detským pacientom. Pomocou týchto učebných textov si študenti medicíny majú osvojiť základné psychologické poznatky, získať vedomosti o efektívnej komunikácii s pacientmi, príbuznými a ostatným zdravotníckym personálom, tvorivo pristupovať k riešeniu problémov pri práci. Zároveň práca zdôrazňuje potrebu duševnej hygieny a starostlivosti o seba, ktorá je v práci lekára nevyhnutná.

Forensic medicine is a fundamental medical discipline that deals with determining the cause of death in cases of violent and non-violent deaths, as well as investigating and assessing the effects of violence on the human body, including in cases involving living persons. This textbook provides a comprehensive and complex overview of the basic tasks and theoretical knowledge of forensic medicine. Its aim is to provide a theoretical basis in the form of images of morphological autopsy findings for the study of the compulsory subject Forensic Medicine and Medical Law in the study programs General Medicine and Dentistry. The author emphasizes the need to know the basics of forensic medicine in every medical field and to take a multidisciplinary approach when clarifying medical-legal issues.

The script deals with the issue of harmful alcohol use and its consequences on individuals’ cognitive abilities. The first part is devoted to the diagnosis of dependence syndrome and the assessment of risky drinking according to internationally recognized classifications (ICD, DSM). The following chapters explain the concept of cognition and its main components. Attention is also given to changes in cognitive functions during long-term alcohol abuse. The reader is introduced to the anatomical changes in the brain caused by alcohol. Damage to white matter and disorders of neurotransmission are described. Special focus is placed on diagnoses associated with alcohol use, such as Korsakoff syndrome, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, demyelinating disorders, and hepatic encephalopathy. Attention is also paid to the possibilities of diagnosing cognitive dysfunction. General screening tests such as MMSE or MoCA are presented. More specific tools, such as PHES or BEARNI, are described in greater detail. The script also points out the possibilities of pharmacological treatment. Non-pharmacological approaches, including cognitive remediation therapy and computer-based training, are also discussed. The conclusion is devoted to modern neuromodulation methods, in particular transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation. „Patológia 2. časť (letný semester) - Praktické cvičenia pre študentov všeobecného lekárstva“ je druhou časťou vysokoškolskej učebnice predstavujúcou druhú polovicu výučby (letný semester). V tejto časti je popísaných 70 diagnóz, kde každej je venovaná jedna strana. V popise je uvedené poradové číslo zhodujúce sa s číslom preparátu a názov danej diagnózy. Študent sa pri každom preparáte oboznámi so základnými informáciami o danej chorobe, jej makroskopickým a mikroskopickým obrazom. Navyše je vytvorené miesto, v ktorom si študent môže zaznačiť (nakresliť) charakteristický mikroskopický obraz danej choroby. Preparáty v tejto učebnici sú zamerané na špeciálnu patológiu – patológiu pľúc, hematopatológiu, patológiu gastrointestinálneho, urogenitálneho systému, prsníka, endokrinného, pohybového a nervového systému, kože, novorodeneckého a detského veku.
Tým, že učebnica umožňuje preparáty zakresľovať, vytvára študentom priestor pre trvalejšie zapamätanie si danej problematiky. Je vynikajúcim zdrojom pre prípravu študentov na kolokvium a ústnu skúšku.
