It is precisely the lack of popularity of research methodology among students that led to the preparation of this textbook. The stylistic approach of this text was chosen with the intention of introducing the fundamentals of methodology to students encountering it for the first time, without alienating methodologists. The text primarily serves as a teaching aid for the course "Exercise in Research Methodology" and the seminars "Bachelor Thesis Seminar" and "Master's Thesis Seminar." The scientific monograph "Spirituality in Slovak Realist and Modernist Literature" reevaluates interpretative approaches to the spiritual dimension in prose texts of Slovak literature from the realist and modernist periods. The author transcends stereotypical views on spirituality, often confined to religious themes, and advocates for an interdisciplinary approach and new methodological approaches in literary-critical research. The monograph focuses on literary characters and their spiritual dimension in connection with other compositional and semantic elements of literary texts. It does not offer a definitive view on the topic but aims to open discussion and highlight the need for a reassessment of the literary canon and the openness of artistic literature to multiple interpretations. The analysis of texts from Slovak realism and literary modernism demonstrated a differentiated spirituality and its artistic portrayal. The phenomenon of spirituality is present in the texts along the axis of explicitness - implicitness - latency and has its specific manifestation in shaping literary characters through psychologization, introspection, and spiritual depth.

The theme of self-care is currently a significant trend, emerging as a protective factor in numerous demanding life situations. The implementation and internalization of self-care are highly desirable in certain life phases. One of the challenging life stages is considered to be higher education. Pursuing studies at a university entails substantial life changes: a new social circle; novel forms of academic workload; the initiation of interpersonal relationships; and the process of self-independence. Self-care offers students the opportunity to establish order in their lives, to pause and contemplate the meaning of things, and to maintain well-being. The aim of the textbook is to assist students in understanding the concept of self-care, its potential benefits, and strategies for implementation. It provides various examples, case studies, and worksheets for initial engagement with self-care practices.

Although chronic non-communicable diseases currently dominate overall morbidity and mortality in developed countries, epidemics of infectious diseases, especially those caused by new or emerging pathogens, occur more frequently and spread faster and further in new territories. The starting factors of this threat are mainly ecological and climatic changes and changes in human demography and behaviour. The growing resistance to ATB is also very serious, as a result of which there is a significant increase in the incidence of infectious diseases and their spread to new geographical locations. Current problems of epidemiology and microbiology in research and clinical practice are mainly focused on rapid detection and subsequent response to diagnosed diseases. The correct diagnosis of an infectious disease is the result of a clinical picture, knowledge of the current epidemiological situation and laboratory confirmation of the etiological agent. The identification of microorganisms allows us to establish the correct definitive diagnosis and subsequent targeted therapy, but also to start immediately with appropriate anti-epidemic measures to control the spread of the infectious agent.

Štúra SAV, v. v.i. V univerzitných priestoroch Učebno-výcvikového zariadenia Danišovce sa počasdvojdňového podujatia stretli nádejní mladí jazykovedci nielen zo Slovenska, ale aj z Českej republiky. Výstupom kolokvia mladých jazykovedcov býva najprv zborník abstraktov, publikovaný už v čase realizovania podujatia, a neskôr zborník príspevkov ako pripomienka tejto udalosti a tiež ako odraz vedeckých záujmov mladých lingvistov. Kolokvialisti prezentovali svoje príspevky venované výskumným problémom z rôznych oblastí jazykovedy, a to z oblasti korpusovej lingvistiky, onomastiky, morfológie, dialektológie, syntaxe, štylistiky, lexikológie, frazeológie aj didaktiky, niektorí dokonca s presahom do literárnych textov.

Proceedings of the 13th Scientific Conference of Young Historians, organized by the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice in cooperation with the State Archives in Košice and the Slovak Historical Society at the Slovak Academy of Sciences on 24 October 2023 The central theme of the conference proceedings of the scientific conference of doctoral students is the issue of power as an instance that is an inherent part of human existence and has been present in society de facto since its beginning. Since power and the desire for power are present even today, perhaps more than at any other time in the history of human society, the proceedings provide adequate answers to the questions: where is power born and from what does it originate? How do social science disciplines view those social groups that do not hold power? The publication consists of eight contributions by authors working at Slovak and Czech universities. The volume opens with a paper by Dávid Nykodým on power in the city of silver in the era of Jiří of Poděbrady. The administration of estates in the hands of widows in the 17th century (on the example of Judith Balassa) was discussed by Sabina Danková. The issue of the role of the university grand master in the monopolization of education during the First Empire 1808-1815 in France was examined by Michael Dudzik. The period between the two world wars on the territory of Czechoslovakia was mapped in their contributions by two authors: Simona Bilecová, who characterized the emergence and creation of the political elite on the example of the Rožňava region, and Dominik Šípoš, who evaluated the power of the party as an ideological problem of the Czechoslovak National Democracy. This line was continued by Patrik Beňuš, who analysed in detail the crisis in railway transport in the southern territory of Slovakia after 1938. Monika Tresová dealt with the activities of Catholic associations in Košice and their disappearance under the pressure of the communist power after 1948. Miriama Balvirčáková dealt with the power and its legitimacy, judicial rehabilitation of the victims of the communist regime in Eastern Slovakia in 1968-1971.

This textbook has been designed for the master students of chemistry teaching (combined) at the Faculty of Science, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice as a source of model school experiments in general and inorganic chemistry. It will be used for teaching the Special Practice of School Experiments I compulsory course. It consists of instructions for experiments related to the selected topics in general and inorganic chemistry as well as the didactic and technical aspects of their performance. Each experiment includes an explanation of the principle, specification of the tools and chemicals needed, working procedure, and the respective apparatus assembly scheme. At the end of each experiment, the observation and explanation necessary for the correct interpretation of the results of the chemical experiment performed are provided. To follow the requirements for the digital transformation of education, selected computer-aided experiments and visualiser projections have been included as well. The next part is focused on the work with the monitoring suitcase, which can be used for making simple field experiments related to environmental topics. The final part is dedicated to attractive experiments that complement the topics in inorganic chemistry and can be used to motivate students. All experiment instructions are in line with the requirements specified by the state educational programmes for primary and grammar schools. This book allows teachers to select appropriate demonstrative experiments or experiments for laboratory classes performed by students themselves. The videos of selected experiments are also available as part of the interactive periodical table of elements operated by the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

Jednotlivé príspevky sú rozdelené do troch sekcií – občianske právo hmotné, civilné právo procesné, právo duševného vlastníctva. The Department of Commercial Law and Economic Law together with the Department of Labour Law and Social Security Law of the Faculty of Law of UPJŠ in Košice organized the 8th annual student symposium, this time on commercial, labour and private international law, which took place at the Faculty of Law of UPJŠ in Košice on 1 December 2023. The student symposium under the title Commercial and Labour Law on a Common Wave was carried out as part of the research projects VEGA 1/0259/22 and VEGA č. 1/0291/23. The aim of the annual symposia is to create a discussion platform for students under the supervision of mentors from among the members of the department, namely teachers, researchers and PhD students. The theme of this year's symposium brought about discussion of interesting theoretical and practical legal issues thematically focused on the synergy of business law and labour law. The students addressed topical issues related to the status of entrepreneurs, the conduct of companies in labour law relations as well as the duties and responsibilities of employees. The topics of the sharing economy, gender quotas in corporate bodies and unfair bribery were not forgotten. While working on individual topics, students had the opportunity to improve their analytical thinking and argumentation skills, while they could practice writing a legal professional text, which in practice often increases the success of every lawyer. Students had the opportunity to develop their critical thinking and learn how to clearly formulate their own opinions on current legal issues. After the presentation of the papers, not only the team of lecturers and researchers, but also the students themselves engaged in a fruitful discussion, asking a number of original questions. Each student participant was awarded a certificate for their active participation in the symposium. The present proceedings are the outcome of the students' work from this event.

This electronic material focuses on the subject of secondary metabolism and its products - secondary metabolites. The material gives an overview of the basic building blocks and construction mechanisms through which molecules can be synthesized in living organisms (plants). The processes of formation of the mentioned metabolites are explained using the basic mechanisms of organic reactions. Several of the secondary metabolites presented have a remarkable biological profile and are used as therapeutics or serve as lead compounds for the development of novel pharmacological agents. This electronic document is primarily intended for students of the Master's degree programme in Organic Chemistry as supporting material for the profile subject Chemistry of Natural Products.

This electronic material provides the basic principles of creating a systematic nomenclature of organic compounds, from the simplest hydrocarbons to the more complicated nomenclature of carbohydrates. For some groups of derivatives, alternative ways of generating system names are also mentioned, as well as the most common trivial names that are still in use in the literature and in practice, in some cases being the characteristic (dominant) ones. In the introductory section, the basic rules to be respected when writing names of organic compounds are discussed. This document is intended primarily for interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate students as support material for the courses Organic Chemistry and Selected Chapters in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. In the final section of this document, solved examples are given so that the student can check how the rules for forming the names of organic compounds have been understood.

An important part of theoretical computer science is the problem of Turing machines. This computational model has two basic properties: like any other computational program, the software of a Turing machine is composed of instructions, but in its case they are all of a single type. Every other (so far known) computer program can be transformed into a Turing machine program without loss of information. While the second feature reduces the question of what a calculator cannot do to the question of what a Turing machine cannot do, the first feature allows a much simpler investigation of such a question. Using this computational model, we can thus find concrete problems that no automaton can ever deal with (perhaps the most famous is the problem of the Turing machine stopping). Their existence demonstrates the fundamental limitations of (not only ideal) computational means, and thus encourages both criticality and humility in our thinking.

The textbook Citizenship in the Context of the Ethics of Care seeks to introduce students of the humanities and social sciences to current issues of citizenship from the perspective of a specific moral-philosophical theory—namely, feminist moral philosophy, specifically the feminist ethics of care. Traditionally, the topic of citizenship and its related questions have been perceived and studied primarily as subjects of political thought and political theory.

We predominantly consider citizenship as a political category, which is mainly the domain of political science or, at most, other social science disciplines. However, both the past and the present urge us to reflect on citizenship in connection with humanity and solidarity, and thus from a moral perspective. Understanding citizenship solely as a political category and political institution is insufficient. The conceptual separation of politics from morality and ethics results in difficulties in grasping citizenship as a morally relevant category and as an ethical value. This, in turn, prevents us from critically analyzing the assumptions underlying our understanding of citizenship and, ultimately, from identifying the causes and factors that contribute to the failures of civil society, as well as the shortcomings and deficits in the realization of citizenship as a vision based on freedom, equality, and solidarity.

Thus, the textbook clarifies the values associated with democratic citizenship, while also highlighting the potential of the feminist ethics of care as an analytical, evaluative-critical, and applicative tool for understanding and examining the concept of citizenship and the practice of citizenship as a caring practice, and as the practice of caring for a good life in civil society.

The presented textbook is a direct output of the KEGA grant project "Innovative Model of Education Leading to Active Citizenship as a Prevention of the Rise of Political Extremism among Students" (014UPJŠ-4/2020). The principal investigator of the project is Assoc. Prof. Mgr. Gabriel Eštok, PhD. The project was carried out in the years 2020–2022.

Bolesti kloubů, páteře a přidružených měkkých tkání patří mezi časté stížnosti pacientů. Kniha je praktickým návodem, jak rozpoznat a léčit různé formy bolestivých kloubních stavů v každodenní klinické praxi. Uvedeny jsou konkrétní laboratorní testy a zobrazovací metody, které přispívají k diagnostice zánětlivých a systémových revmatických onemocnění.
Ve speciální části jsou popsány jednotlivé nozologické jednotky podle konkrétních kloubů. V samostatných kapitolách je uvedeno rameno, loket, ruka a zápěstí, kyčel, koleno, hlezno s klouby nohy a kotníkem a páteř se sakroiliakálními klouby. Diskutovány jsou příčiny bolestí kloubů na podkladě vybraných traumatických příčin, degenerativních, zánětlivých a systémových onemocnění, chorob asociovaných nebo přímo navozených infekcí, bolestí podmíněnou nádorovým onemocněním, vrozenými vývojovými vadami, některými neurologickými, cévními, metabolickými nebo jinými vzácnými stavy. Důraz je kladen na rozlišení jednotlivých příčin od těch častých až po méně častá až vzácná onemocnění postihující pohybový aparát.
Kniha je určena pro lékaře, kteří se zabývají diagnostikou a léčbou onemocnění pohybového aparátu, primárně je určena pro revmatology, ortopedy a rehabilitační lékaře. Pro přesah problematiky nemocí pohybového aparátu je vhodná i pro praktické lékaře, internisty, ale i lékaře jiných oborů.

The population exchange between Czechoslovakia and Hungary was carried out on the basis of the Agreement on the Exchange of Populations between Czechoslovakia and Hungary, which was signed on February 27, 1946. Its adoption was not only part of Czechoslovak solutions to the status of national minorities, but also part of the strategic concept of building a state of Czechs and Slovaks without Germans and Hungarians.

The agreement was part of the postwar resolution of mutual disputes and misunderstandings and was intended to be one of the solutions that, in the postwar period, would eliminate a factor which, according to Czechoslovak political leaders, had caused the war conflict.

The population exchange between Czechoslovakia and Hungary was therefore not an isolated historical event, but part of migratory movements that had begun in Europe already after the First World War, and can be seen as a continuation of previous developments as part of migration patterns in Europe.

The university textbook "Advanced Electrochemical Methods" is a teaching aid intended for master's or doctoral students studying electrochemical subjects at the Department of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

These textbooks follow and further develop textbooks focused on the basic electrochemical methods currently used in modern research. The presented teaching texts are processed in sixteen clear chapters, where they provide a theoretical principle and derivation of electrochemical processes and mechanisms in individual methods. Teaching texts also consist of practical laboratory exercises, in which students can try out the real application of the studied electrochemical methods.

The practical tasks are focused primarily on the demonstration of research that is carried out at our workplace. Students will be able to try, for example, electrochemical modification of the electrode surface, preparation of electrochemical sensors for the determination of analytes, preparation and characterization of a dye-sensitized solar cell or electrochemical evolution of hydrogen.

The textbook is intended for university students who are preparing for the profession of biology teacher. The structure of the book is similar to an encyclopedia, with one page devoted to each content item, but the topics of the chapters and subchapters follow each other.

The explanatory text on the page illustrates the diagram and there are notes and links to other sources of information. For better orientation, the content of the textbook is divided into 8 sections, which cover several chapters. It follows the general didactics, which it connects with the teaching of biological content. The book provides a basic orientation in the approaches to learning this subject, and also explains the relationship between biology as a science and the didactics of biology. It deals with teaching standards and curricula, advises on how to master biological concepts and understanding, how to communicate with students in biology classes, when and why are effective visual and practical methods. It acquaints the reader with the issue of setting goals for biological education in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective areas in relation to formative and summative assessment.

Hopeful as well as experienced teachers will find in this publication not only a look into the history of teaching biology, but also a look into the future. Current trends in biology teaching, the connection of teaching with digital technologies, the virtual learning environment and interactive simulations and models belong to science lessons today.

The university textbook Citizenship of the European Union is structured into four parts. The first chapter focuses on the characteristics of citizenship in a historical context (concepts of citizenship in the ancient, medieval and modern periods).

The second chapter deals with a theoretical introduction to citizenship. It comes up with the characteristics of citizenship, introduces the ways of acquiring and losing citizenship and the transformations of citizenship in the context of globalization and multiculturalism.

The third chapter focuses on European Union citizenship itself, its historical development and the process of introducing and strengthening citizenship in the European Union.

The fourth chapter presents the specific rights of citizens deriving from European Union citizenship - the right to free movement, the right to vote and stand as a candidate in municipal and European Parliament elections, the right to diplomatic and consular protection in the territory of a third country, the right to petition the institutions of the European Union, the right of access to documents of the institutions and bodies of the Union, and the right of initiative of the citizens of the European Union.

The Student Scientific Conference is defined as a compulsory elective subject within the accredited study programs of the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, UPJŠ. It was organized for the first time at the department in 2011.

The primary goal of this already traditional event is the presentation of partial results of student-authored research, primarily linked to selected factual parts or theoretical foundations of bachelor’s and master’s theses. This also explains the broad thematic spectrum of the internal content of each conference. Besides awarding credits for participation, the conference offers students a range of added values, which can be understood as its secondary objectives.

On this basis, as organizers, we considered it beneficial to qualitatively elevate the “round” anniversary edition of the Student Scientific Conference and give students the opportunity to publish their contributions. Within the submitted proceedings, 7 texts are published, of which 4 are from the bachelor’s level and 3 from the master’s level of study. The contributions cover a wider spectrum, mainly cultural-historical topics spanning from the Early Middle Ages to the second half of the 20th century, which also demonstrates the wide range of thesis topics processed at the department.

As organizers of the event, we have the ambition for publishing the proceedings to become as much a tradition as the Student Scientific Conference itself, as we consider this meaningful in relation to our work with students. Last but not least, we would like to express our gratitude to our colleague and friend Mgr. Henrich Hrehor, PhD., who has been the long-term main organizer and the “spiritual father” of the entire event since 2011. Thanks are also due to the head of the department for annual support and to the colleagues who undertook the reviewing of contributions within the submitted proceedings.
