The presented monograph deals with various views on of the community issue and community work, with which  area of social work or other helping professions is closely connected. The authors consider community work to be one of the possibilities for fully involving the inhabitants in co-responsible decision-making on things that fundamentally affect their lives. The monograph characterizes in  fifteen chapters the community and the processes that takes place in it, outlines a brief history and approaches in community work. It offers theoretical background, which is used in community work as a necessary prerequisite for a professional approach practice. The monograph also points to the important position of professional help in  community.

Hlavným výskumným problémom je kolokvializácia výrazových prostriedkov ako príznaková vlastnosť vo verejne publikovaných publicistických textoch. Východiskom samotného výskumu bolo vyhľadanie lexikálnych jednotiek so štylistickým kvalifikátorom hovorovosti v Krátkom slovníku slovenského jazyka. Ich prítomnosť a frekvencia, ako aj prípadné významové posuny boli overované vo verejne prístupných mediálnych komunikátoch. Keďže ide o výskum „živého jazyka“, pramenným materiálom sú publicistické texty v datábaze Slovenského národného korpusu.

Sprievodca onkologickou liečbou vznikol v čase, kedy sa ešte viac zdôraznil význam zdravia, ktoré sa stáva akousi megahodnotou nového moderného „pandemického“ človeka. Použitie pojmu „pandemický“ človek vznikol samozrejme v súvislosti so vznikom koronavírovej pandémie na celom svete, ale predovšetkým preto, že sa iné nebezpečné dlhodobé ochorenia, ktoré ohrozujú súčasného človeka, nejako dostávajú do úzadia. Závažnosť takýchto chorôb (akými je samozrejme aj rakovina) sa ale nezmenší tým, že sa upriamila pozornosť na niečo akútnejšie. To je veľmi dôležité si uvedomiť a nepodľahnúť ilúzii, že ak prekonáme akútne nebezpečenstvo, tak sa automaticky zlepší stav aj v dlhodobých ochoreniach. Myslíme si, že je to práve naopak, nakoľko dlhotrvajúca existencia stresu, vplyv sociálnych negatívnych a neustále pôsobiacich faktorov, medzi ktoré nesporne patrí pandemická situácia, zhoršuje nielen psychický, ale aj somatický stav.

Bedeker onkologickej liečby sa práve snaží poukázať na tie faktory – psychologické a sociálne – ktoré negatívne „podporujú“ vznik rakoviny v akejkoľvek forme a pozitívne môže ovplyvniť liečbu a vyrovnávanie sa s chorobou.

Bedeker onkologickej liečby ponúka možnosti sociálneho zapojenia sa do skupiny iných ľudí, ktorí sa takisto liečia z onkologickej choroby a umožňujú zdieľať psychologicky aj odborne obdobnú situáciu s tými, ktorí riešia podobné, ak aj nie také isté problémy v liečbe. Autorky dúfajú, že sa bedeker, ktorý vychádza knižne aj elektronicky, dostane do rúk tým, ktorých urobí samostatnejších v zdolávaní tak ťažkého nepriateľa, akým je rakovina.

For a non-governmental organization to be successful, it must focus, among other things, on its main goal of spreading its vision and mission to another area. It can achieve success by increasing its visibility and raising awareness about its activities in society, sending a clear message, and maintaining transparency. The monograph deals with specific areas in which non-profit NGOs are active, i.e. marketing and fundraising. Both these areas are of key importance for the NGO’s success, therefore they require particular attention. It is well known that NGOs lack proper support in Slovakia and their funding is insufficient given the demand for their services. NGOs therefore search for multiple sources of funding and use marketing as a tool. The monograph explains the importance of NGOs in the non-profit sector and justifies the tools they employ when navigating the commercial space.

The research monograph is focused on studying the effectiveness of the Unplugged prevention program conducted at primary schools across Slovakia. Using two large datasets with repeated measures, the monograph contributes to research knowledge about substance use prevention. The authors studied protective and risk factors, developmental trends of smoking and alcohol consumption as well as the effectiveness of the Unplugged prevention program – its effect on psychological and behavioural indicators of health-related behaviour. Considering the complexity of the analyses on two datasets with 5 waves of data, each chapter is presented as a separate research study. The findings serve as a basis for recommendations for parents and teachers and also for school management at primary schools that support effective school policy aimed at the prevention and promotion of the health in schoolchildren.

The monograph deals with the post-millennial media discourse in the UK and aims to popularize the currently used methodological framework in the form of a case study. The theoretical basis is provided by the introductory chapters, which deal with the topic of migration and newspaper discourse in the UK. The methodological framework represents an increasingly popular combination of corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis, which is introduced not only theoretically but also practically used in the presented case study. The case study compares the language used in the British newspapers before and after the lifting of labor market restrictions in the UK for Bulgarians and Romanians, specifically in 2013 and 2014. The research is based on the identification of special language patterns used in the compiled corpus to characterize Bulgarians and Romanians, specifically paying attention to nouns, verbs and numerals. By doing such research, scholars can identify the role of media discourse in depicting social reality.

The monograph provides a brief insight into the theory of news structures in the press and, consequently, the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis is applied in an examination of the structures of news. Critical discourse analysis following the theory and methodology of Teun van Dijk is used to analyse the representation of an industrial dispute, the Miners’ Strike of 1984-1985 in the UK, in the Czechoslovak newspaper Pravda. The aim of the monograph is to examine the ways in which a single news item dealing with an international event was presented in a national newspaper based on its ideological perspective. The presented analysis does not cover all possible aspects of van Dijk’s approach of critical discourse analysis. A variety of issues remains to be explored in order to develop a richer, more complex analysis of the text structures. The monograph also intends to demonstrate that critical discourse analysis can complement more qualitatively the traditional method of quantitative content analysis.

The textbook is intended for students of Slovak studies to study the subject of didactics of Slovak as a foreign language.

Its core consists of relevant knowledge gained from the didactics of Slovak as a foreign language, with references to other professional literature. The textbook also includes practical guides for teaching specific language phenomena in schools with Hungarian as the language of instruction or in schools where students predominantly have a mother tongue other than Slovak, such as Romani. Essentially, it involves transforming knowledge acquired and verified in teaching adult foreigners, mainly at universities, into a didactic context for the second level of elementary school and high school, with appropriate emphasis on teaching Slovak as a foreign language at the first level of elementary school as the starting point for the educational process.

The textbook builds on the findings of real research on the state of teaching Slovak as a foreign language in elementary and secondary schools in eastern Slovakia, conducted in projects (EXPERT and DiSaC) implemented at UPJŠ in Košice from 2012 to 2015.

The monograph Maša Haľamová in the triad Dar – červený mak – Smrť tvoju žijem was created as part of the project APVV-19-0244 (Methodological Approaches in Literary Research with an Impact on the Media Environment) in collaboration between Ivica Hajdučeková and Iveta Bónová.

In two parts – Personal History and (Re)interpretation of Maša Haľamová's Poetry, and Phonetic-Rhythmic Embodiment of Maša Haľamová's Poetry – it presents the results of archival research (reconstruction of life events, notes on poetic inspiration, consensus in the opinions of literary critics of the 20th and 21st centuries), (re)interpretations of three poetic collections focusing on the spiritual dimension and the process of spiritualization, and an in-depth analysis of the phonetic-rhythmic qualities of verse structure.

In conclusion, the authors suggest that the Slovak poet Maša Haľamová can be considered a representative of spiritual poetry, which in the Slovak interwar literature follows a specific type of confessional (Protestant) tradition, and at the level of phonetic embodiment, her sound-rhythmic potential acts in the name of subtlety of expression.

Currently, these histories are often presented as an extension of the history of science. The history of knowledge not only expands the boundaries of the history of science but also explores the boundaries between different forms of knowledge and ignorance. Just as studies of historical memory have expanded and complemented their interest in researching forgetting, the history of knowledge includes studies of ignorance. They focus on the change that has occurred over the past decades: from the sacralization of science and respect for professional knowledge to the rejection of science and constant questioning of professional knowledge, to which the history of knowledge must also respond. Findings as a product form the basis of human interactions and have their own past. What was the significance of knowledge and cognition in different historical periods? How did state power influence the development of knowledge and cognition? What can be considered knowledge in a particular historical era or culture? Finally, is there any human activity that cannot be considered knowledge? Currently, in the field of the history of knowledge, a significant surge in research, publishing, and the emergence of new institutions can be observed. The eleventh doctoral conference—Meeting of Young Historians XI, organized by the Department of History at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in cooperation with the Slovak Historical Society at the Slovak Academy of Sciences—will contribute to expanding the perspective on the past of knowledge and cognition. As the name of the conference implies, the pivotal topic of submitted contributions is metanoia, which represents a change in life attitude. Various interesting and actual issues concerning diverse aspects of social work are discussed in the individual contributions. The present collection comprises contributions oriented towards the issues of social pathology and its prevention, supervision, the importance of digital technologies in social work, research methods, self-care and so forth. The collection further contains several contributions devoted to the exceptionally actual issues of radicalism and extremism, which are widespread and serious occurrences in the present time.
