The monograph entitled The first Slovak women’s magazines: Dennica, Živena, Slovenská žena (1898–1923) provides a general view of the initial stage of the formation of women’s magazine production in Slovakia, defined by a period of 25 years at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries between 1898 and 1923, in the context of the historical and social development, to which the Slovak journalistic milieu inevitably responded. The publication is a result of detailed material research of Slovak historical periodicals, implemented mainly from the perspective of the mediological methods and standards of research work.

The development of this bilingual coursebook evolved as part of project KEGA Nr. 020UPJŠ-4/2013 headed by prof. PhDr. Ján Gbúr, CSc., and emerged from earlier research which had successfully analysed realist and modernist Slovak literature from a gender perspective. Based on initial interpretations which drew from philosophical, sociological and historiographical approaches, we were able to anticipate the issues which could be raised in other texts and thus establish a hypothesis for the subsequent literaryscientific research. Our research has also been influenced by the continually evolving nature of gender studies, and we have therefore decided to adopt a somewhat unusual approach in this coursebook and briefly examine some contemporary texts thereby creating an intentional shift in our timeline. The modern works of Z.Kepplová and U. Kovalyk have raised a number of interesting issues, and a study of the interwar work of M. Urban reveals further interpretations on the basis of gender. After this brief overview, we return to the main focus of the study: gender approaches to Slovak literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The study focuses on the complexity of male-female relationships in the work of both male and female authors of realist and modernist literature at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Works by the founding generation of realism and late realism were analysed, with particular attention being paid to the fiction of M. Kukučín, J. Čajak, J. G. Tajovský, J. Jesenský, E. M. Šoltésová, T. Vansová, Ľ. Podjavorinská and B. S. Timrava. The works of H. Gregorová and Ľ. Groeblová were also studied as prime examples of Slovak literary modernism. 

We hope that this bilingual coursebook will allow realist and modernist Slovak fiction, and the Slovak national literary tradition in general, to receive wider critical renown beyond the borders of Slovakia and also to demonstrate its place in contemporary literary theory.

Rozhodovanie sa je našou každodennou činnosťou, či už ide o rozhodnutie o takých bežných záležitostiach, ako čo si dáme na raňajky alebo o tom, pre akú prácu sa rozhodneme po skončení školy. Práve kvôli ďalekosiahlym dôsledkom, ktoré môže mať jedno rozhodnutie na celý náš život, ide o oblasť, ktorej bola v psychológii venovaná veľká pozornosť. Veď klasické ciele psychológie ako popísanie, vysvetlenie či predvídanie ľudského správania sú vlastne pokusmi o vysvetlenie rozhodovania, snahou o nájdenie a popísanie faktorov, ktoré naň pôsobia. Snažia sa o to základné psychologické disciplíny ako psychológia emócií a motivácie, kognitívna psychológia, sociálna psychológia či psychológia osobnosti. V predkladanom texte prevláda najmä kognitívny prístup, sústreďujúci sa na proces spracovania a využívania informácií. Keďže je len veľmi málo skutočností, ktorých výskytom v budúcnosti si môžeme byť úplne istí, základnými pojmami sú slová vyjadrujúce neurčitosť smerom do budúcnosti, ako sú neistota, riziko, objektívna a subjektívna pravdepodobnosť. Hlavnou otázkou je teda spracovanie informácií prichádzajúcich z prostredia a proces ich využitia v procese tvorby rozhodnutí. Sú popísané faktory, ktoré vplývajú na formovanie úsudkov i na tvorbu konečného rozhodnutia. Keď sa pozrieme napr. na príčiny finančnej a následnej ekonomickej krízy, začínajúcej v roku 2008, vidíme že jedným z hlavných faktorov jej vzniku bolo nesprávne vnímanie pravdepodobností, považovanie rizikových investícií za veľmi bezpečné. Dúfam, že predkladaný text napomôže k efektívnejšiemu usudzovaniu a rozhodovaniu, aby sa vám podobné osobné krízy, ktoré by mohli byť následkom nesprávneho úsudku, vyhli. Istým opodstatnením vydania učebného textu je aj nedostatok pôvodnej literatúry venujúcej sa prezentovanej problematike, aj keď už aj v našich podmienkach je psychológia rozhodovania oblasťou záujmu stále väčšieho počtu výskumníčok a výskumníkov.

Prezentujú sa tu výsledky filozofie dejín filozofie ako metateoretického pohybu vo vnútri dejinnofilozofického myslenia, ktorého zámerom nie je empiricky opísať dejinnofilozofický proces, ale pochopiť ho a vysvetliť ako neoddeliteľnú súčasť tých najvýznamnejších filozofických problémov – čo je filozofia, čo je metafyzika a otázka bytia.

The monograph deals with the issue of social protection of the family, where the basis is a view of the family as a natural part of human and social life. The starting point is provided by the institutes that create and structure it, influence its value orientation, the development of social relations within the family, but also relations to the social environment. In broader contexts, the monographic treatment of social protection provides the results of transdisciplinary knowledge. It deals with the work of helping professionals with functional and non-functional families and families with special needs. The monograph provides a brief insight into the theory of news structures in the press and, consequently, the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis is applied in an examination of the structures of news. Critical discourse analysis following the theory and methodology of Teun van Dijk is used to analyse the representation of an industrial dispute, the Miners’ Strike of 1984-1985 in the UK, in the Czechoslovak newspaper Pravda. The aim of the monograph is to examine the ways in which a single news item dealing with an international event was presented in a national newspaper based on its ideological perspective. The presented analysis does not cover all possible aspects of van Dijk’s approach of critical discourse analysis. A variety of issues remains to be explored in order to develop a richer, more complex analysis of the text structures. The monograph also intends to demonstrate that critical discourse analysis can complement more qualitatively the traditional method of quantitative content analysis.

This textbook is designated for the students of translation and interpreting study programmes. The increase of linguistic competence in foreign language, but also in mother tongue is an inevitable part of the preparation of translators and interpreters. The low linguistic competence is often one of the reasons of the unsatisfactory quality of translation. The main aim of this book is to provide the material for the consolidation of linguistic terminology and for the improvement of oral and written utterances in the Slovak language. Consequently, the textbook encompasses the theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical part summarizes the basic knowledge of language levels. In the practical part, there is the brief description of the selected orthoepic, morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic norms of the standard Slovak with the reference to the relevant literature offering deeper analysis of the given problem. Then practical exercises verifying the mastering of linguistic norms follow. At the end of the book, there is the little Slovak-English dictionary of the selected linguistic terms that may help students in their study of the English linguistics.

Social work with a group, along with social work with individuals, social work with the community and social work with society, is one of the basic methods used in the field of social work, but also in other helping professions. The work of a social worker requires knowledge of these methods but also of the techniques through which these methods are implemented and fulfilled. Understanding and acquiring individual methods for the needs of social practice requires the theoretical mastery of those institutes that are the basis of the method and the interrelationships between these institutes. Therefore, the author proceeded to elaborate a university textbook in which she focuses on one of the basic methods of social work, namely social work with a group.

The university textbook is designed for university students who are focused on social work studies, but also psychology, ethics and other disciplines using the method of working with a group, as it aims to present some facts about social groups and behaviour in them.

The author offers an insight into social work with the group from its historical foundations to today's latest knowledge of this method in accordance with the latest research of work with the group.

The scientific monograph The Value of Human Life in the Connotations of Postmodernism presents a current issue of reflections on the value of human life. It sees in the broader connotations of postmodern society, where the approaches of applied ethics (bioethics), philosophy and Christian theology intersect. This issue is embedded in the historical, philosophical, sociological and cultural-social Postmodernism. The monograph analyses the postmodern value system, the dominant postmodern anthropological concept, secular bioethics and civil law in relation to human life and its value. The key is the confrontation of the postmodern anti-life mentality and life in the most discussed bioethical issues: contraception, artificial insemination techniques, genetic manipulation, abortion, sterilization, (bio) technology, euthanasia. An alternative approach is offered by the theological vision of human and life presented in the Judeo-Christian context. In the light of modern theological disciplines, the personnel concept is enriched by theological anthropology culminating in an eschatological vision. In this sense, the issue of the value of human life culminates, which is also inspired by one of the most important encyclicals of Pope John Paul II. Evangelium vitae (25th anniversary of its writing). It is she who calls for the acceptance and respect of every human life and for the practical development of a new culture of life.

Druhé (doplnené a rozšírené) vydanie bilingválnej učebnice Rodový aspekt v slovenskej literatúre na prelome 19. a 20. storočia (Interpretačné etudy)/Gender Perspectives in Slovak Literature of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries (Interpretation Studies) ponúka širšiemu okruhu príjemcov – študentom učiteľstva akademických predmetov aj učiteľom v praxi – didaktickú transformáciu aktuálnej výskumnej problematiky (s podporou e-gramotnosti využitím online prístupov a QR kódov), ktorá vznikla v spolupráci so Školou úžitkového výtvarníctva v Košiciach (od roku 2019/20 s názvom Škola umeleckého priemyslu) v akademickom roku 2018/2019.

Odborná spolupráca v rámci projektu KEGA č. 008UPJŠ-4/ 2017 – Veda bez bariér (Interdisciplinárne inšpirácie súčasnej literárnej vedy a jazykovedy v edukačnej praxi na VŠ) s vyučujúcou slovenského jazyka a literatúry PaedDr. Janou Valicovou a vyučujúcou fotografického dizajnu Mgr. Renátou Novotnou Markovičovou zo ŠUP prebiehala v rámci projektového vyučovania. Priniesla výsledky v dvoch interdisciplinárnych výstupoch:

1. vytvorenie Literárneho salónika v študentskej kaviarni Minerva v areáli Filozofickej fakulty UPJŠ,

The theme of self-care is currently a significant trend, emerging as a protective factor in numerous demanding life situations. The implementation and internalization of self-care are highly desirable in certain life phases. One of the challenging life stages is considered to be higher education. Pursuing studies at a university entails substantial life changes: a new social circle; novel forms of academic workload; the initiation of interpersonal relationships; and the process of self-independence. Self-care offers students the opportunity to establish order in their lives, to pause and contemplate the meaning of things, and to maintain well-being. The aim of the textbook is to assist students in understanding the concept of self-care, its potential benefits, and strategies for implementation.
