“Pathology Part 2 (summer semester) - Practical lessons for students of general medicine” represents the second half of the university textbook designed for the pregradual study of pathology. The textbook complements the lectures of pathology and serves as a source of information for students of general medicine, that are preparing for the practical credit, as well as the final oral examination.

In this part of the “Pathology” series, seventy selected histopathological slides are presented. Each selected slide is provided with general information in relation to etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, as well as with corresponding morphological features, including the gross appearance and the most important histopathological characteristics. The textbook summarizes the basic concepts of systemic (organ) pathology (pathology of the lungs, hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, urogenital system, breast, endocrine, musculoskeletal, nervous system, skin childhood and infancy), that is logical continuation and completion of general pathology in the first semester.

Vysokoškolské učebné texty sú zamerané na najčastejších profesionálnych respiračných ochorení, ktoré sú na Slovensku i v ostatných krajinách Európskej únie treťou najčastejšou skupinou ochorení súvisiacich s pracovnou expozíciou. Poškodenie dýchacieho traktu môže mať prechodný, ale aj trvalý a často klinicky a prognosticky závažný charakter. Publikácia sa venuje základným skupinám ochorení – intersticiálne ochorenia pľúc, alergické ochorenia a nádorové ochorenia.  Jednotlivé kapitoly podrobne približujú etiopatogenézu ochorení, klinický obraz, diagnostické metódy a diferenciálnu diagnostiku. Záverečná kapitola upriamuje pozornosť na vyšetrovacie metódy v pracovnom lekárstve. V jej prvej časti sú rozpracované funkčné vyšetrovacie metódy dýchacieho systému. Druhá časť sa venuje zobrazovacím vyšetrovacím metódam s názornou obrazovou dokumentáciou najčastejšie hlásených pneumokonióz.

Vysokoškolský učebný text Chlopňové chyby je prvou slovenskou publikáciou, ktorá sa venuje využitiu simulátorovej medicíny vo výučbe auskultácie srdca. Cieľom publikácie bolo skvalitnenie štúdia vnútorného lekárstva využitím kardiologického simulátora, ktorým disponuje Centrum simulátorovej a virtuálnej medicíny (CSVM) na Lekárskej fakulte UPJŠ. Výučbový materiál môže poslúžiť nielen ako príprava k praktickým cvičeniam so simulátorom Cardiology Patient Simulator „K“ ver 2 (Kyoto Kagaku), ale aj ako užitočná pomôcka pre študentov počas praktických cvičení pri lôžku pacienta. Študenti v publikácii nájdu okrem detailného opisu auskultačných nálezov na jednotlivých chlopniach aj podrobne vysvetlenú ich klinickú manifestáciu u pacienta pri fyzikálnom vyšetrení. Samozrejmou súčasťou sú EKG a echokardiografické nálezy a v neposlednom rade aj možnosť manažmentu jednotlivých chlopňových chýb podľa najnovších odporúčaní Európskej kardiologickej spoločnosti. Využitie publikácie je pre študentov medicíny od internej propedeutiky (3. ročník) až po záverečné štátnicové skúšky.

Although chronic non-communicable diseases currently dominate overall morbidity and mortality in developed countries, epidemics of infectious diseases, especially those caused by new or emerging pathogens, occur more frequently and spread faster and further in new territories. The starting factors of this threat are mainly ecological and climatic changes and changes in human demography and behaviour. The growing resistance to ATB is also very serious, as a result of which there is a significant increase in the incidence of infectious diseases and their spread to new geographical locations. Current problems of epidemiology and microbiology in research and clinical practice are mainly focused on rapid detection and subsequent response to diagnosed diseases. The correct diagnosis of an infectious disease is the result of a clinical picture, knowledge of the current epidemiological situation and laboratory confirmation of the etiological agent. The identification of microorganisms allows us to establish the correct definitive diagnosis and subsequent targeted therapy, but also to start immediately with appropriate anti-epidemic measures to control the spread of the infectious agent.

Laparoskopická chirurgia dnes predstavuje štandardnú a v mnohých ohľadoch preferovanú modalitu chirurgickej liečby. Dynamika jej celosvetového rozšírenia, umožnená pokrokom v biomedicínskych technológiách a rozvojom globálnych informačných a komunikačných kanálov, nemá v histórii chirurgie obdobu. V súčasnosti už prakticky neexistuje žiadna brušná operácia, ktorá by sa nevykonávala laparoskopickým spôsobom, pričom v mnohých prípadoch je už laparoskopický postup metódou voľby.

Napriek, a možno práve vďaka bezprecedentne rýchlej penetrácii laparoskopických operácií do každodennej chirurgickej praxe naďalej v mnohých ohľadoch absentujú všeobecne akceptované technické štandardy. Vysoká variabilita procesných postupov v rámci jednotlivých laparoskopických operácií vychádza skôr zo zvyklostí daného pracoviska ako z medicíny založenej na dôkazoch. Táto situácia je ďalej modifi kovaná rozvojom nových a staronových koncepcií charakteru minilaparoskopie, SILS či NOTES a ich hybridných kombinácií s klasickou laparoskopiou.

Cieľom monografi e je pritiahnuť pozornosť odbornej verejnosti späť k základným princípom laparoskopickej chirurgie, ktoré by mali byť základňou pre efektívne a bezpečné vykonávanie laparoskopických operácií, ako aj bázou pre kritický postoj k módnym inovatívnym trendom. Obsahovo sa sústredí skôr na všeobecne menej známe a v našich podmienkach zriedkavo diskutované témy, ktorých význam sa hlbšie analyzoval len v nedávnej minulosti. Našou ambíciou bolo vytvoriť vyvážený materiál, ktorý by bol zaujímavým primárnym informačným zdrojom nielen pre lekárov špecialistov, ale aj pre poslucháčov lekárskych fakúlt a kolegov v špecializačnej príprave v chirurgických odboroch.

The presented textbook is intended for students of general medicine and should support their knowledge about indication and interpretation of basic biochemical tests. Clinical biochemistry continues to be one of the most rapidly advancing areas of laboratory medicine, which in line with using of modern technology more and more emphasizes the evidence-based medicine in order to improve diagnosis and monitoring of patients. Selected topics have an ambition to outline and explain the most common issues of biochemical diagnosis of in internal medicine. Individual chapters are devoted to disorders of water, electrolyte and acid-base balance, kidney and liver disease, diabetes mellitus, and biomarkers used in the diagnosis of cardiac necrosis and heart failure. Given the limited range, the textbook merely summarizes the basic knowledge that students have obtained during the study of other subjects, such as medical biochemistry, pathophysiology and internal medicine, and emphasis is given to laboratory diagnosis in accordance with the newer guidelines of professional societies. We hope that the textbook will be helpful in the study of clinical subjects and encourage students' interest in laboratory medicine.

The publication includes a classification of anemias based on pathophysiological mechanisms, including impaired red blood cell production, increased destruction and blood loss. It provides detailed description of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, as well as aplastic and hemolytic anemias, including some of the rare hereditary forms. The text features chapters on laboratory diagnostics, investigative methods, and interpretation of results. The aim of this publication is to present the latest findings of the international study Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC), regarding the health and health-related behavior of school-aged children in Slovakia.After four years, it again brings information on various topics covering physical and mental health, nutritional behavior, leisure-time activities, use of psychoactive substances, within social environment of school-aged children, including family, school and peers. The publication also presents newfindings connected to objectively measured physical fitness of these children. Finally, data about school-aged children with special educational needs are also presented.The findings play an important role in understanding the needs of the new generation of adolescents and are an important source of information for all those who work with them, not only professionals but also parents.Last but not least, they are also beneficial for all stakeholders and institutions who participate in the preparing of policies and strategies focused on supporting the health of school-aged children.

The textbook provides a clear view of the importance of respiratory care, with an emphasis on prevention and treatment procedures. The introductory chapters present the anatomical and physiological principles of respiratory function necessary for understanding further contexts of the issue. Methods for facilitating expectoration of mucus and foreign bodies are explained. Great emphasis is placed on correct procedures for humidifying and warming the inhaled mixture, including the basics of aerosol therapy. This is an issue that is particularly important in invasive, but also non-invasive methods of ventilation therapy. The work also contains more detailed physical justifications for the explained principles. From a practical perspective, the chapters that draw attention to frequent errors in the use of humidification and aerosol technologies are also important. National Report on the Health and Health-Related Behaviour of 11-, 13-, and 15-Year-Old Schoolchildren Based on the Survey Conducted in 2021/2022 within the International Project “Health Behaviour in School-aged Children” (HBSC)

For several years, this study has provided us with key insights for a better understanding of the health-related behaviour of our young people. It examines a range of health-related topics such as sleep, mental well-being, nutritional behaviour, and physical activity. Important areas of research also include school and social relationships within it, family and family background, as well as peer relationships.

The findings deepen our understanding of the mechanisms influencing differences and changes in young people’s health and risk behaviours. They are crucial for the development of effective health promotion programmes and health-related behavioural interventions, educational programmes in this field, and for monitoring their effectiveness—not only at the national but also at the international level. The knowledge gained is important for a better understanding of the needs of schoolchildren and for adapting services and systemic support so that these needs are taken into account to the greatest possible extent in today’s rapidly changing world. The study can help us understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of both mental and physical health.

The pandemic and the related epidemiological and hygiene measures aimed at limiting the spread of the virus have meant significant restrictions in the daily lives of people of all ages—including children and adolescents. The standard educational process, social contact with peers, extracurricular activities, and other interests both in and out of school were severely disrupted, which had a significant impact on the experiences of schoolchildren.
