V rámci odborného programu odznie šesť plenárnych prednášok významných odborníkov z Univerzity Pavla Jozefa Šafárika a uskutočnia sa dva workshopy. Prezentovať výsledky svojej doterajšej vedeckovýskumnej práce bude spolu 52 doktorandov dennej formy štúdia, z toho 26 doktorandov v sekcii lekárskych a prírodných vied (Lekárska fakulta/Prírodovedecká fakulta) a 26 doktorandov v sekcii spoločenskovedných a humanitných vied (Právnická fakulta/Fakulta verejnej správy/Filozofická fakulta).

The Student Symposium is regularly organized by the Institute of International Law and European Law, and in 2017, it marked the jubilee tenth edition of the symposium, which over time expanded its focus to include European law.

The tradition of holding student symposia is also associated with the good practice of preparing proceedings from each event. Understandably, the tenth edition is no exception, and thus, the tenth edition of the symposium proceedings is now available to readers. In previous years, the symposium has always focused on specific areas of international and European law. Thus, the subjects of study for symposium participants have included migration issues (2016), the protection of cultural values (2015), and the challenges of cyberspace (2013).

This year, given that it is the jubilee tenth edition, the symposium organizers have chosen to approach the symposium's focus thematically and recall some significant milestones in the development of international law that occurred in years ending with the number seven.

University textbook „Cursus Latinus - textbook“ is intended for students of the study program Latin language and literature. It is divided into „Introduction“ and 37 lessons. The content of lessons is morphology, sentence syntax and selected phenomena of case syntax of the Latin language. Each of the lessons contains a grammatical explanation, followed by sentences designed to demonstrate the forms of grammatical phenomena and the required vocabulary (Dictionary). Using these examples, students learn the basic principles of translation from Latin into Slovak and from Slovak into Latin. The textbook also includes a Latin-Slovak dictionary containing the entire vocabulary used in the textbook. The „Cursus Latinus - textbook“ is intended for the interpretation of grammar and the acquisition of grammatical phenomena of the Latin language under the guidance of the teacher. A parallel exercise book (Cursus Latinus – exercise book) is used to practice Latin grammar at home. The exercise book includes a key to the exercises and a Latin-Slovak dictionary containing vocabulary from the textbook and the exercise book. University textbook „Cursus Latinus - textbook“ is available electronically in PDF format.

University textbook Lingua Latina – Exercise Book for Historians is a parallel study material to the textbook Lingua Latina – Cursus Communis. It is designed for practicing grammar at home. The content of the exercises corresponds to the focus of the individual lessons in the mentioned textbook, both in terms of the covered grammatical phenomena and vocabulary. For this reason, only vocabulary not covered in the textbook's lessons is included in the exercises.

The Latin-Slovak dictionary at the end of the exercise book contains all the vocabulary from both the exercise book and the textbook. The Slovak-Latin dictionary includes the vocabulary from exercises that require translation into Latin. The vocabulary in this exercise book is oriented towards the needs of history students and, given the selection of source materials, also includes non-classical lexicon or non-classical meanings of classical words (this lexicon is marked with the symbol *).

The exercise book includes a key that allows students to directly verify the correctness of their work. The textbook Lingua Latina – Exercise Book for Historians is available electronically in PDF format. As part of the teaching program, online tests available on the KKF FF UPJŠ website (https://www.upjs.sk/filozoficka-fakulta/katedra-klasickejfilologie/katedra/) also serve to practice the covered material.

The university textbook deals with the latest knowledge from the systematics of vascular plants in a clear manner. Vascular plants arose in the Silurian period in the Paleozoic, when the first primitive plants moved from water to dry land, which required evolutionary progress in the morphological and anatomical structure of these plants. During about 420 million years of the existence of vascular plants, several of their main groups have evolved: the spore vascular plants, including the lycopods (branch Lycopodiophyta) and group of ferns and related plants (branch Monilophyta), and the seed plants, including gymnosperms (branch Gymnospermae) and angiosperms ( Angiospermae), which currently dominate among plants. The textbook provides a brief but comprehensive overview of the main groups, orders and families of plants with their description, distribution, main representatives, while also addressing the useful properties of selected species. The work is complemented by an overview of the system of plants by Cronquist, Tachtadžjan, APG and an overview of the families of the Slovak flora, as well as a taxonomic index.

The first personal monograph, On the Lyrical Triptych of Maša Haľamová (Life and Work), by co-authors Ivica Hajdučeková and Iveta Bónová, presents the results of archival research and analytical-interpretative insights into the structure of poetic texts. Life events at key points (V znamení osmičiek, Domov na brehu jazera, V ruchu redakčnej práce, Fáza po Mladých letách) are reconstructed based on autobiographical memories, archival documents, personal correspondence, as well as unpublished or published articles and interviews. An intriguing perspective on the author´s work is offered by self-referential notes and a reconstruction of opinions on her poetics and the artistic value of her poetry from the years 1928 – 2017, as expressed by contemporary and modern literary critics. The reconstruction of the genesis of the poem Dar (Gift), which relates to her connections with A. Kostolný and E.B. Lukáč, revealed the underpinnings of poetic inspiration and confirmed the productivity of archival research and exegetical methods. The analytical-interpretative insight into lyrical triptych Dar – Červený mak – Smrť tvoju žijem, realized through a spectrum of differentiated spirituality and the method of hermeneutic reading with an emphasis on the function of polyvocality, demonstrated that meta-empirical reality is shaped through natural imagery and the function of allusion. Across the three poetry collections, the lyrical parable and the process of spiritualization or spiritual growth of the lyrical subject are depicted, emblemized by the red poppy, blooming limber pine, and flowering moss. In conjunction with the analysis of the rhythmic-melodic structure of free yet phonetically organized verse – utilizing not only the folkloric inspirations of folk songs and ballads but also the religious tradition of spiritual hymns, prayers, and psalms – which confirmed that the poet´s sense and sensitivity for the „colourfulness“ of sounds and the „melodiousness“ of tones contributed to the architectural formation of the final form. This form is inseparably infused with the meta-empirical dimension of spirituality (eisos – eidos – Logos).

Cieľom publikácie bolo skvalitnenie štúdia vnútorného lekárstva využitím kardiologického simulátora, ktorým disponuje Centrum simulátorovej a virtuálnej medicíny (CSVM) na Lekárskej fakulte UPJŠ. Výučbový materiál môže poslúžiť nielen ako príprava k praktickým cvičeniam so simulátorom Cardiology Patient Simulator „K“ ver 2 (Kyoto Kagaku), ale aj ako užitočná pomôcka pre študentov počas praktických cvičení pri lôžku pacienta. Študenti v publikácii nájdu okrem detailného opisu auskultačných nálezov na jednotlivých chlopniach aj podrobne vysvetlenú ich klinickú manifestáciu u pacienta pri fyzikálnom vyšetrení. Samozrejmou súčasťou sú EKG a echokardiografické nálezy a v neposlednom rade aj možnosť manažmentu jednotlivých chlopňových chýb podľa najnovších odporúčaní Európskej kardiologickej spoločnosti. Využitie publikácie je pre študentov medicíny od internej propedeutiky (3. ročník) až po záverečné štátnicové skúšky.

EFFUSE - Scientific Education for Advanced is an educational material designed for university students interested in ecological sciences, biology and environmental protection. The publication was developed as part of the EFFUSE project and focuses on the scientific investigation of living organisms in the river ecosystem, with an emphasis on their ecological role and importance as bioindicators. The river ecosystem is a dynamic environment where a wide range of organisms can be studied, from algae and phytoplankton to aquatic invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles. This publication presents a detailed study of their adaptations, life cycles, reproductive strategies and their importance for ecological balance. Particular attention is paid to fish and amphibians, whose environmental demands and sensitivity to pollution make them important indicators of water quality and environmental status. The publication also provides guidance on how to integrate their study into university education in the form of practical research. It also includes a chapter on science education in the context of sustainable development, which is often absent from university curricula in Slovakia and Ukraine. This material promotes the link between theory and practice and develops students' scientific thinking in order to prepare them to meet the environmental challenges of the future.

Social work is among the helping professions that can be considered highly risky from various perspectives. The clientele utilizing social services is very diverse, often consisting of individuals in extreme life situations. It is typical for help to be sought only when the client is at rock bottom. Along with other factors, this can lead to the emergence of various risky situations. The proceedings were created within the framework of the VEGA task No. 1/0332/12 titled Analysis of Selected Risk Factors of Client Violence in Social Work with an Emphasis on Prevention of Client Violence and Preparation of Social Workers - National Mapping of the Occurrence of Client Violence Against Social Workers in Slovakia. The thematic focus of the proceedings is broader, as client violence is only one of many risks in social work. In the proceedings, the reader will find 52 articles that address the riskiness of social work from many perspectives. They offer an interesting overview of theoretical foundations as well as research findings. The numerous thematic contributions indicate that the issue of risk in social work is highly relevant and that attention is paid to it in both theory and practice.

The textbook complements the lectures of pathology and serves as a source of information for students of dental medicine, that are preparing for the practical credit, as well as the final oral examination.

In this part of the “Pathology” series, forty-four selected histopathological slides are presented. Each selected slide is provided with general information in relation to etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, as well as with corresponding morphological features, including the gross appearance and the most important histopathological characteristics. The textbook summarizes the basic concepts of systemic pathology (pathology of the heart, vessels, lungs, gastrointestinal, urogenital system, breast, musculoskeletal, nervous system, skin and infancy) and pathology of the orofacial region, that is logical continuation and completion of general pathology in the first semester.

Epidemiológia je samostatný vedný odbor, ktorý sa zaoberá štúdiom procesu vzniku a šírenia ochorení, navrhuje opatrenia na ochranu a zlepšenie zdravia a kontroluje ich účinnosť. Jej hlavným cieľom je prispievať k znižovaniu chorobnosti a úmrtnosti, k ochrane a upevňovaniu zdravia, ako aj k predĺženiu života a zlepšeniu jeho kvality u jednotlivcov a v populácii.

Aj napriek tomu, že dominantné postavenie v celkovej morbidite a mortalite vo vyspelých krajinách majú v súčasnosti chronické neinfekčné ochorenia, epidémie infekčných ochorení sa vyskytujú stále. Dnešná doba so sebou prináša nové hrozby, ktorým musí epidemiológia, ale aj iné vedné odbory (napr. verejné zdravotníctvo, infektológia, cestovná medicína a pod.) čeliť. Ide najmä o infekcie vyvolané novými alebo novo sa objavujúcimi patogénmi, zmeny životného prostredia a životného štýlu, klimatické zmeny, rastúca rezistencia na antibiotiká, odmietanie očkovania, chudoba a pod.

Prvý diel predkladaných učebných textov prináša informácie týkajúce sa epidemiologického vyšetrovania v ohnisku nákazy, prehľad o klasifikácii infekčných chorôb z pohľadu epidemiológa a podrobnejšie sa venuje problematike črevných nákaz. Samostatná kapitola je venovaná modelovým situáciám, ktoré prispejú k pochopeniu danej problematiky a zvládnutiu obdobných situácií priamo v praxi.    

Učebné texty sú prioritne určené študentom bakalárskeho a magisterského štúdia odboru Verejné zdravotníctvo, ale určite si v ňom množstvo informácii nájdu aj študenti Všeobecného lekárstva a študenti ďalších bakalárskych a magisterských odborov Lekárskej fakulty UPJŠ v Košiciach.

The topics covered in the proceedings include issues such as social services, field social work, school social work, and similar areas. Additionally, they highlight the dangers of socio-pathological phenomena such as truancy, drug addiction, poverty, bullying, and more.

The presented results clearly demonstrate the importance of social work and other helping professions in working with specific client groups.

The last decade marks not only the average life expectancy increase in healthy population, but also life expectancy increase in group of people with intellectual disorders/disabilities. Due to their diagnosis that defines and classifies them into specific categories, people with intellectual disability are finding themselves in a constant confrontation with obstacles negatively affecting the saturation of their existential needs. It creates mostly educational, social, cultural, psycho-social and economical disadvantage in the context of their lives. Consequently, their active potential is weakened, making it unable for them to influence public affairs in society from a position of an adult or elderly citizen. Building up on this condition, the focus of this monograph is on understanding and explanation of prevailing concept of social inclusion and related concepts of social exclusion. These concepts influence the way we tend to define and think about the character of society, as such.

Simultaneously, we are examining that the quality of coexistence between dominant population and people with intellectual disabilities is dependent on the development of attitudes and opinions of major population towards this specific minority. These attitudes reflect the extent of social tolerance and at the same time serve as a quantification of moral values and equity in the society, whether it concerns any type of small everyday help or professional and institutionalised long-term support.

This monograph focuses on presenting professional care for people with mental disability in form of social services as a dominant type of support in our local environment. We show that the quality of social services inevitably depends on degree of professional competences social workers possess. The significance of professional competences social workers are capable of using is reflected in the degree of the competence and adequacy of their performance. The primary aim, in relation to which professional competences should be accustomed, is to enhance meaningfulness and dignity in life of mentally disabled receivers of the social services.

Competences of social workers are a dynamic phenomenon that modifies along the development of society and also with the frequently altering needs of people with intellectual disability as receivers of the social service. For this reason we designed the presented research to reflect our goal to reappraise the scope of professional competences and define the required professional functions of social workers working with people with intellectual disability.

This monograph is dedicated not only to professionals working with this group of people but also aims at answering basic questions to practical issues that families with a intellectualy disabled member are coming into contact with.

On June 4-6, 2024, Stará Lesná will host the 10th year of the university-wide event ‘Spring School of Doctoral Students of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice’. As part of the professional program, there will be five plenary lectures by prominent experts from Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice and Comenius University, and one workshop will be held. A total of 47 full-time doctoral students will present the results of their scientific research work, of which 23 doctoral students in the section of medical and natural sciences (Faculty of Medicine/Faculty of Science) and 24 doctoral students in the section of social sciences and humanities (Faculty of Law/Faculty of Public Administration/Faculty of Arts). Part of the professional program of the event will be a panel discussion with the Management of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.
