The concept of medical ethics is interpreted as both applied and professional ethics. As a bioethical discipline, it consists of three normative parts: biogenesis, biotherapy, and thanatology. From an ethical perspective, medicine is part of clinical bioethics; however, at the current stage, “evidence-based ethics” is still lacking.

In the context of standardizing health care, there is an excessive development of certain components of bioethics (such as ethical codes and the concept of patient autonomy), but also a reduction, especially of its clinical component (such as communication, thanatology, euthanasia, dysthanasia, and futile treatment). Current legislative efforts are leading to a reduction in the rights of health care workers, particularly in terms of corporate autonomy.

The fundamental task of medical ethics is the cultivation of medical professionalism, which is defined as the professional alignment of expert, ethical, and legal reasoning, and as a starting point for thinking in terms of values, with reflection on the bioethical space in clinical and professional practice.

Since society declares health as its priority, this priority should positively influence the entire health care system, and its basic idea should be a health care system based on a humanistic ethical paradigm with social and professional application.

Obsahuje najnovšie poznatky z relevantných odborov doplnené názornými obrázkami, tabuľkami a grafmi. Prehľadne členené kapitoly zoznámia študentov s problematikou bunkovej biológie, procesov molekulovej biológie a zákonitosťami genetiky. Vysokoškolská učebnica je určená predovšetkým pre slovenských študentov I. ročníka lekárskych fakúlt. Jej obsah je podkladom pre úspešné zvládnutie obsahovej náplne predmetu biológia. Učebnica je vhodná aj ako hlavný zdroj informácií pre študentov prírodovedeckých fakúlt. Tieto podrobnejšie údaje sú odlíšené veľkosťou písma a nie sú nevyhnutné pre zvládnutie skúšky z biológie. Príslušné informácie však môžu využiť i študenti vyšších ročníkov lekárskych fakúlt či študenti postgraduálneho štúdia.

Vysokoškolský učebný text Ochorenia jazyka sa zameriava na anomálie a choroby postihujúce jazyk.  V jednotlivých kapitolách opisuje vrodené stavy, s ktorými sa na jazyku stretávame, ich diagnostiku ako aj možnosti liečby, ako aj jednotlivé samostatné chorobné jednotky. Úvodnú kapitolu tvoria lokálne ochorenia jazyka, kedy ochorenie nemá prejavy na iných ústnych slizniciach. Ďalšou skupinou sú ochorenia, kde je symptomatológia choroby prítomná na jazyku, ale aj na ostatných ústnych slizniciach. Okrem týchto stavov vznikajúcich priamo v ústnej dutine sú v ďalších kapitolách rozobraté stavy, kde celkové ochorenia, akými sú infekčné, endokrinologické, krvné a dermatologické ochorenia vyvolávajú zmeny na jazyku. Samostatné kapitoly sú venované prekanceróznym stavom a benígnym a tumoriformným léziam.  Poslednú kapitolu tvoria ochorenia jazyka u detskej populácie.

The premise “today’s research shapes the healthcare of tomorrow” expresses the importance of medical research and the reason for its pursuit. Scientific research and advances in biomedical sciences, as well as their application in medical practice and in the process of delivering healthcare, nevertheless bring new problems in the area of ethics.

Biomedical research itself requires the precise definition of hypotheses, which are tested both under laboratory conditions and on experimental animals. Although clinical studies on human subjects are expected to benefit individual participants and to advance fundamental biomedical knowledge, they also entail certain risks depending on the nature of the research. These risks must be minimized, and the experiment should be conducted freely while also taking place within specific measures to protect all involved-not only the test subjects, but also the researchers themselves.

The presented publication provides an overview of the general conditions and ethical principles of research involving laboratory animals and human subjects, the issue of professional and ethical assessment of projects, as well as fraud and the publication of results. At present, we are witnessing tremendous progress in molecular biological sciences, which brings ethical dilemmas also in the field of genetics. For this reason, one of the chapters is devoted to the latest findings in this area.

Vysokoškolský učebný text: “Vybrané kapitoly z reumatológie pre študentov lekárskych fakúlt“je určený na  pregraduálne štúdium pre študentov lekárskych fakúlt v študijnom odbore: všeobecné lekárstvo a zubné lekárstvo v rámci predmetu interná medicína 4. Kapitoly uvedené v danom diele zahŕňajú základy reumatológie, ktoré postačuje pre absolventa LF UPJŠ, zároveň slúži aj pre pregraduálnu prípravu v nelekárskom študijnom odbore – fyzioterapia.  Uvedené informácie sú základom pre prípravu na tzv. postupovú skúšku v rámci spoločného internistického kmeňa a zároveň podkladom aj pre špecializačné štúdium v odboroch všeobecný lekár a fyziatricko- rehabilitačný lekár. Text je rozdelený na  tieto časti:  vyšetrovacie metódy v reumatológii, terapeutické výkony v reumatológii,  autoimunitné ochorenia v reumatológii, kryštálmi indukované artritídy, infekčné artritídy, nezápalové reumatické ochorenia a metabolické ochorenia kostí. V závere je obrazová príloha k jednotlivým nozologickým jednotkám, ktoré sú podrobne opísané v texte.

Učebnica pre lekárov a študentov všeobecného lekárstva

Medicína je neprestajne sa vyvíjajúca vedná disciplína. Základný výskum v spojení s klinickou praxou rozširujú súčasné vedomosti, čo sa veľmi výrazne prejavuje aj v neurovedách, v praktickej podobe hlavne v neurofyziológii, neurofarmakológii, neurológii, diagnostickej aj intervenčnej neurorádiológii a v neurochirurgii. V priebehu ostatných troch desaťročí neurovedy prekonali pozoruhodný vývoj. Podnietili ho potreby praxe a umožnilo využitie poznatkov biológie, chémie, biochémie, aplikovanej matematiky, výpočtovej techniky a fyzikálnych objavov realizovaných v moderných prístrojoch i liečebných postupoch. To všetko podstatne uľahčilo, spresnilo a urýchlilo diagnostiku ochorení nervového systému, umožnilo relatívne bezpečné chirurgické zásahy na štruktúrach v minulosti nedostupných a otvorilo nové perspektívy, hlavne v oblasti reparácie poškodených tkanív, respektíve ich funkcií autotransplantáciou kmeňových/progenitorových buniek, terapeutickými zásahmi na genómovej, prípadne proteómovej úrovni. Ako vysokoškolskí učitelia sa každodenne stretávame nielen s mimoriadnym záujmom študentov i zdravotníckych pracovníkov o nové poznatky, ale aj s určitou neistotou pri posudzovaní možností, ktoré jednotlivé disciplíny patriace do skupiny neurovied ponúkajú. Jednou z príčin spomenutého javu je pravdepodobne časový faktor, keď najnovšie poznatky ešte nestačili preniknúť do odbornej literatúry, alebo v nej nie sú dostatočne zdôraznené. Druhou príčinou môže byť pomerne malá skúsenosť s niektorými ochoreniami nervového systému, ktoré sa síce vyskytujú zriedkavejšie, ale ich následky sú závažné. Cieľ, ktorý sme sledovali napísaním tejto učebnice, bolo aspoň čiastočne odstrániť spomenuté nedostatky všetkých odborných publikácií.

Počas prípravy rukopisu sme sa snažili, aby terapeutické postupy, názvy liekov a ich dávkovanie boli v súlade s najnovšími poznatkami vedy a klinickej praxe. Oprávnene však môžeme predpokladať, že budúce objavy zmenia súčasný pohľad na problematiku diagnostiky aj liečby ochorení nervového systému.

Vysokoškolská učebnica je určená študentom všeobecného lekárstva UPJŠ Lekárskej fakulty v Košiciach a lekárom, zameraným hlavne na všeobecné lekárstvo.

The e-learning textbook is available at: https://portal.lf.upjs.sk. The textbook contains 11 chapters focusing on the microscopic anatomy of the head and neck region, with an emphasis on the oral and nasal cavities, skull bones and their development, and the detailed microscopic structure of teeth and their development. One chapter is dedicated to dentition from the perspective of the clinical significance of understanding tooth structure and development. The textbook includes chapters on the microscopic anatomy of organs that are functionally important for the head region, such as the vascular, lymphatic, endocrine, and nervous systems. The textbook is linked to an atlas, has a total of 490 pages, and features 300 original microphotographs using common histological stains, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and impregnation methods.

The textbook was created with the support of the KEGA project 019UPJŠ-4/2016.

„Patológia 2. časť (letný semester) - Praktické cvičenia pre študentov všeobecného lekárstva“ je druhou časťou vysokoškolskej učebnice predstavujúcou druhú polovicu výučby (letný semester). V tejto časti je popísaných 70 diagnóz, kde každej je venovaná jedna strana. V popise je uvedené poradové číslo zhodujúce sa s číslom preparátu a názov danej diagnózy. Študent sa pri každom preparáte oboznámi so základnými informáciami o danej chorobe, jej makroskopickým a mikroskopickým obrazom. Navyše je vytvorené miesto, v ktorom si študent môže zaznačiť (nakresliť) charakteristický mikroskopický obraz danej choroby. Preparáty v tejto učebnici sú zamerané na špeciálnu patológiu – patológiu pľúc, hematopatológiu, patológiu gastrointestinálneho, urogenitálneho systému, prsníka, endokrinného, pohybového  a nervového systému, kože, novorodeneckého a detského veku.

Tým, že učebnica umožňuje preparáty zakresľovať, vytvára študentom priestor pre trvalejšie zapamätanie si danej problematiky. Je vynikajúcim zdrojom pre prípravu študentov na kolokvium a ústnu skúšku.

V predloženej učebnici si autori predsavzali zhrnúť informácie, ktoré pre úspešné absolvovanie predmetu Anestéziológia a intenzívna medicína považujú za esenciálne. Množstvo textu je stranovo limitované, preto si nemožno nárokovať na kompletnosť zhrnutej problematiky. Predpokladá sa, že študent na preukázanie vedomostí v študijnom predmete Anestéziológia a intenzívna medicína využije aj poznatky a skúsenosti nadobudnuté počas prednášok, praktických cvičení a samostatného štúdia iných dostupných zdrojov podľa zverejneného obsahu okruhov tém vyžadovaných na skúšku.

Jednotlivé kapitoly sú vybraté a zostavené tak, aby obsiahli štyri základné oblasti, ktoré sa vyučujú v rámci predmetu Anestéziológia a intenzívna medicína. Sú to: Anestéziológia, Intenzívna medicína, Liečba bolesti a Neodkladná starostlivosť.

Učebnica poskytuje základné informácie v odbore aj lekárom začínajúcim pracovať v odbore Anestéziológia a intenzívna medicína, lekárom pracujúcim v blízkych medicínskych odboroch, najmä chirurgických a v intenzívnej medicíne. Určite si však v nej nájdu zdroje mnohých informácií aj sestry pripravujúce sa na skúšku v postgraduálnom špecializačnom štúdiu v odbore Anestéziológia a intenzívna starostlivosť.

Although we are not really sure if “Love is coming from the Heart” and nor we know where “the Residence of Soul” is, we are still overwhelmed by its unprecedented effort to keep us alive. Our lives are nowadays fulfilled with enormous chances to satisfy our needs and wishes. Hand in hand is changing our way of life, the intake of calories is growing and the amount of physical activity decreasing. We live longer and maybe happier but our hearts
and vessels are like mirrors showing us how we live. Diseases of the Heart and vessels have become the number one cause of death in highly developed countries including our homeland.
Prevention of cardiovascular diseases has become and an important social and health care system issue. The knowledge requirement of basic principles of cardiology and heart surgery is increasing. Without an understanding of basic principles a good clinical practice is hardly possible.
Together with my Colleagues of Heart surgery department of VÚSCH and LF UPJŠ we prepared this short overview of basic knowledge about surgery of the human heart. We hope that reading it will be more an adventure than a painful journey. If you find some answers to your unanswered questions our effort was not a waste of time.

Colorectal carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the digestive system, and its rising incidence in Slovakia—particularly among the male population—is alarming. Although significant progress has been made in the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of patients with advanced colorectal cancer, therapeutic options remain limited, necessitating the discovery of additional markers to serve as prognostic predictors.

This monograph aims to draw the attention of the professional community to the critical role and significance of the TGF-β signaling pathway in the initiation, progression, and treatment of colorectal carcinoma. A substantial portion of the text focuses on lesser-known emerging trends and ongoing clinical trials for colorectal cancer patients.

The monograph aspires to provide a balanced resource that serves as an engaging informational tool not only for specialist physicians but also for medical faculty students. University scripts “Visceral pathology of vascular origin“analyze one of the most challenging vascular regions, the aorta and the visceral aortic branches, from the surgical perspective. The diagnostic and the treatment aneurysms of the abdominal aorta are dedicated to the first chapter. Early diagnostic and operative treatment is crucial in the treatment of ruptured aneurysms of the abdominal aorta. Shortening of the interval between the patient’s arrival with ruptured aneurysm of the abdominal aorta into the hospital and the beginning of the operation decreased the perioperative mortality. This shortening, together with the use of the cell savers, led to the dropping of perioperative mortality from 50% to 20%. The diagnostics and surgical treatment of the acute and chronic occlusion of the aorta and iliac arteries are analyzed in the second chapter. In this chapter, the focus is given to the aortobifemoral bypass as “the gold standard“ of the surgical therapy of aortoiliac atherosclerosis. The management of acute mesenteric ischemia is the content of the third chapter. Acute mesenteric ischemia is a severe condition with high mortality. The problem of acute mesenterial ischemia is a delayed diagnostic that is the reason for poor therapeutical outcomes of the disease. The possible imagine studies and operations used in treating acute mesenteric ischemia are brought in this chapter. Chronic mesenteric ischemia leads to cachexia. The diagnosis of chronic mesenterial ischemia is one of the most demanding, and surgical therapy used in the treatment of chronic mesenterial ischemia also belongs to the most challenging operations. Left-sided colon ischemia belongs to the severe complications of the aortoiliac reconstructions. Left-sided colon ischemia has a high mortality. In the prevention of the left-sided colon, ischemia is preserving at least one internal iliac artery. The complex diagnostics treatment of intraabdominal compressive syndromes as Dunbar syndróme, „Nutcracker“ syndróme a Wilkie syndróme, analyzed in the last chapter.
