University textbook Lingua Latina – Exercise Book for Historians is a parallel study material to the textbook Lingua Latina – Cursus Communis. It is designed for practicing grammar at home. The content of the exercises corresponds to the focus of the individual lessons in the mentioned textbook, both in terms of the covered grammatical phenomena and vocabulary. For this reason, only vocabulary not covered in the textbook's lessons is included in the exercises.

The Latin-Slovak dictionary at the end of the exercise book contains all the vocabulary from both the exercise book and the textbook. The Slovak-Latin dictionary includes the vocabulary from exercises that require translation into Latin. The vocabulary in this exercise book is oriented towards the needs of history students and, given the selection of source materials, also includes non-classical lexicon or non-classical meanings of classical words (this lexicon is marked with the symbol *).

The exercise book includes a key that allows students to directly verify the correctness of their work. The textbook Lingua Latina – Exercise Book for Historians is available electronically in PDF format. As part of the teaching program, online tests available on the KKF FF UPJŠ website (https://www.upjs.sk/filozoficka-fakulta/katedra-klasickejfilologie/katedra/) also serve to practice the covered material.

This peer-reviewed collection of papers is a publication output of the scientific colloquium named The Magic of Sounds, which was organized by the Department of Slovak Studies, Slavonic Philologies and Communication at the Faculty of Arts of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, and by the Košice Branch of the Slovak Linguistic Society at the Ľudovít Štúr Linguistic Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of birth of Associate Professor PhDr. Jozef Liška, PhD., the founder of the Slovak logopaedics. Participants focused their papers on the analysis of the linguistic and speech therapy work of J. Liška, his contribution to Slovak dialectology and orthoepy, presented him as an Anglicist, and they also dealt with the audio aspect of children's speech, exact methods of disturbances and low voice quality measuring, or machine speech processing. An interpretative paper of the documentary They Will Speak Well, a socially important piece of film work, which was made in 1958 under the supervision of J. Liška, is also included in the proceedings.

When studying the Renaissance, researchers utilize various critical and core terms and concepts which it is necessary to characterize. However, many such points, notably the following, are problematic: The relationship between the Renaissance and the antiquity; The connection with the Middle Ages; The transformation to Mannerism and Baroque; Realism and Secularism in Renaissance art; The individualism of the Renaissance artist; The reasons for the creation of Renaissance art in Italy, its determinants and stimulators; Distinguishing between the analysis of the genesis of the Renaissance and the analysis of the creation of the period’s art generally; Regional differences in Italy and their impact on the art; Chronological limits of the Renaissance and its milestones; The terms “Medieval Ages” and “Early Modern Period”; The impact, and its extent, of the artistic influences of the Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque arts on the Renaissance. The term “Renaissance” itself, its content and existence, are also the subject of the discussion with students, alongside learning how such terms and definitions came about and continue to evolve, how they attain their content, how this content morphs in the historical discourse, what academical pluralism and freedom of thinking look like in the discourse led by historians, what the differences are between scientists and schools of thought on the same subject and how it is possible that they are so numerous. The students will come to recognize the leading scholars in the field, and follow their arguments and methodological approaches. They shall be invited to closely trace and scrutinize the logic which those historians use in building their argumentation. It shall be seen that the freedom to create terms, concepts and new definitions cannot stand on an ignorance of the (historical) facts, as becomes clear with expanding knowledge of those historical facts, the variability of their interpretation growing in tandem. This approach, actually used across the whole range of seminars and lectures, shall drive discussion on the topics covered, students being invited to formulate their own theses and antitheses.

The first personal monograph, On the Lyrical Triptych of Maša Haľamová (Life and Work), by co-authors Ivica Hajdučeková and Iveta Bónová, presents the results of archival research and analytical-interpretative insights into the structure of poetic texts. Life events at key points (V znamení osmičiek, Domov na brehu jazera, V ruchu redakčnej práce, Fáza po Mladých letách) are reconstructed based on autobiographical memories, archival documents, personal correspondence, as well as unpublished or published articles and interviews. An intriguing perspective on the author´s work is offered by self-referential notes and a reconstruction of opinions on her poetics and the artistic value of her poetry from the years 1928 – 2017, as expressed by contemporary and modern literary critics. The reconstruction of the genesis of the poem Dar (Gift), which relates to her connections with A. Kostolný and E.B. Lukáč, revealed the underpinnings of poetic inspiration and confirmed the productivity of archival research and exegetical methods. The analytical-interpretative insight into lyrical triptych Dar – Červený mak – Smrť tvoju žijem, realized through a spectrum of differentiated spirituality and the method of hermeneutic reading with an emphasis on the function of polyvocality, demonstrated that meta-empirical reality is shaped through natural imagery and the function of allusion. Across the three poetry collections, the lyrical parable and the process of spiritualization or spiritual growth of the lyrical subject are depicted, emblemized by the red poppy, blooming limber pine, and flowering moss. In conjunction with the analysis of the rhythmic-melodic structure of free yet phonetically organized verse – utilizing not only the folkloric inspirations of folk songs and ballads but also the religious tradition of spiritual hymns, prayers, and psalms – which confirmed that the poet´s sense and sensitivity for the „colourfulness“ of sounds and the „melodiousness“ of tones contributed to the architectural formation of the final form. This form is inseparably infused with the meta-empirical dimension of spirituality (eisos – eidos – Logos).

Otázky trestania sú priamo spojené s trestnou politikou štátu, ktorá je neoddeliteľnou súčasťou sociálnej politiky. Dlhodobo má štát v oblasti trestania osobitné dominantné postavenie. Ak boli splnené podmienky, za ktorých môže byť uložený trest, štát si splní svoju povinnosť. Trest uloží prostredníctvom nezávislých súdov. Pritom nerieši otázky satisfakcie, ktorá prináleží obeti. Obeť môže byť v podobe konkrétnej fyzickej osoby či právnickej osoby, ktorej trestným činom bola spôsobená škoda. Táto škoda súbežne vzniká aj občianskej spoločnosti ako celku. Priorizuje sa povinnosť štátu trestať a rozhodovať v danej veci, pred odškodnením samotného poškodeného, či odškodnením občianskej spoločnosti. Zmeny, ktoré nastali v oblasti trestného práva v posledných niekoľkých rokoch, vyplynuli aj z právnych predpisov Európskej únie. Demokratizácia spoločnosti nastoľuje potrebu zabezpečiť ochranu práv a slobôd občanov, ako aj ochranu celého demokratického systému prostriedkami restoratívnej, teda netrestajúcej justície. Od priorizovania trestania sa pristupuje k posilneniu práv poškodeného v prípade trestného činu, ktorý sa ho dotýka. Ide o možnosť obete rozhodnúť o opatreniach, ktoré majú postihnúť páchateľa trestného činu tak, aby to samotná obeť považovala za dostatočnú satisfakciu. V tejto súvislosti vzniká aj v Slovenskej republike inštitút probačného a mediačného úradníka a samostatnej pozície mediátora, ako riešiteľa občianskoprávnych, rodinných, pracovných a podobných sporov. Tieto nové inštitúty spájajú prvky trestnej justície, sociálnej práce, psychológie, sociológie a ďalších odborov. Pôsobia najmä v oblasti práva, využívajú metódy a postupy sociálnej práce, čím navodzujú zmenu filozofie trestania v trestnom práve. Výkon mediácie a probácie predpokladá poznanie metód a postupov vlastných sociálnej práci. Z uvedeného dôvodu danú problematiku rozpracovávame z pozícií sociálnej práce a poukazujeme na tie oblasti, ktoré sú jej vlastné. Často sa práve v súvislosti s probáciou a mediáciou stretávame s pojmom „sociálna práca v justícii“. Mediáciou v trestných veciach rozumieme mimosúdne sprostredkovanie riešenia sporu medzi škodcom a poškodeným, za asistencie a osobnej účasti mediátora. Mediátor ako nezávislá a nestranná osoba pomáha stranám identifikovať ich záujmy a podporuje ich v hľadaní spoločných praktických a reálnych riešení v bodoch, ktoré spôsobili ich konflikt. Probáciou sa rozumie vykonávanie kontroly, dohľadu nad obvineným, obžalovaným alebo odsúdeným, ako aj individuálna pomoc páchateľovi a pôsobenie tak, aby viedol riadny život. Znižuje sa riziko recidívy, opakovaného páchania trestnej činnosti.

Táto vysokoškolská učebnica má za cieľ ponúknúť čitateľovi poznanie filozofických východísk, zmyslu, a cieľa mediácie, a to na základe výskumu a rozboru činností mediátorov. V krajinách, kde pôsobia mediačné služby, sú jej pracovníkmi často absolventi odboru sociálna práca. Individuálny prístup k páchateľovi trestného činu, ale i k obeti trestného činu, si vyžaduje vedomosti a zručnosti práve z odboru sociálnej práce, psychológie, sociológie, komunikácie a ďalšie, ktoré sa viažu na odbor sociálna práca. Princípy sociálnej práce sa uplatňujú nielen vo sfére sociálnej politiky a sociálnej starostlivosti, ale aj v justícii. Poslaním mediátora je sprostredkovanie alternatívneho riešenia protiprávnych činov pri zachovaní účelu právneho konania, tak ako je definovaný platnými právnymi normami. Svoje poslanie napĺňa prostredníctvom špecifických metód individuálnej sociálnej práce, aplikovaných v oblasti justície. V strede záujmu mediátora nestojí len aktuálny konflikt, ale tiež snaha odhaľovať súvisiace problémy. Zároveň aktivizovať strany sporu k riešeniu sporu a súčasne predchádzať novým konfliktom. Osobitnú pozornosť venujeme filozofickým východiskám mediácie na Slovensku. Ponúkame prehľad základných činností mediátora a druhy mediácií, ktoré sú používané pri napĺňaní spravodlivosti na Slovensku. Analyzujeme ciele mediácie, postavenie jednotlivých strán a postup pri vykonávaní mediácie. V oblasti uplatnenia mediácie sa zaobráme jej možnosťami a uplatnením ako v práve, tak aj v sociálnej práci. Ako vyplýva z uvedeného, mediáciu nemožno chápať iba ako špecifickú činnosť realizovanú v oblasti trestnej činnosti, pretože môže mať široké uplatnenie i v inom mimosúdnom riešení sporov, napríklad v oblasti práce s rodinou, komunitami, a pod., čo býva často verejnosťou opomínané. Špecifickosť prístupu mediátora k rôznym cieľovým skupinám ponúkame z rôznych teoretických východísk. Z tohto rámca vyvodzujeme aktivity, ktoré predpokladáme u mediátorov v budúcnosti. Rozšírenie aktivít vyplýva z konkrétnych situácií prinášaných výkonom mediácie.

The scientific monograph focuses on the analysis of radical and extremist groups, movements, sects and cults and their activities in the Slovak Republic.

It provides a theoretical insight into the issues of specific organizations and movements that have been characterized in the past, or are currently characterized by belonging to ideologies that we might call anti-social.

It does not focus unilaterally on one type of violent extremism, but focuses on the issue of both right-wing and left-wing religious groups. In the final part it offers a brief suggestion of prevention procedures, which could significantly influence the increase of extremist manifestations especially in young people.

Filozofické dedičstvo Jana Patočku ponúka vo svojom celku významné reflektovanie novovekého filozofického myslenia. V našich doterajších domácich historicko-filozofických skúmaniach sa však doposiaľ tejto skutočnosti venovala len veľmi malá pozornosť. Z uvedeného dôvodu je preto prirodzené, že sa chceme po prvýkrát pokúsiť o celostnejšie zachytenie Patočkovho chápania novovekej filozofie. Kolektívna monografia Patočka a grécka filozofia, ktorú sme spracovali ako prvý výstup riešenia projektu APVV, dostáva tak svoje pokračovanie v druhej monografii Patočka a novoveká filozofia. Zavŕšenie nášho úsilia bude potom predstavovať kolektívna monografia Patočka a filozofia 20. storočia.

V predkladanej práci nám ide o predstavenie rozhodujúceho odkazu novovekej filozofie v Patočkovom filozofickom diele. Význam jeho filozofickej výpovede k tomuto dejinno-filozofickému útvaru je prekvapujúco stále živým, aktuálnym filozofickým dedičstvom, bez pochopenia ktorého sa dá len veľmi ťažko komplexne uchopiť hodnota Patočkovho filozofického odkazu. Tomuto poznaniu sme podriadili ako výber, tak aj obsahové naplnenie jednotlivých kapitol našej novej práce.

The development of this bilingual coursebook evolved as part of project KEGA Nr. 020UPJŠ-4/2013 headed by prof. PhDr. Ján Gbúr, CSc., and emerged from earlier research which had successfully analysed realist and modernist Slovak literature from a gender perspective. Based on initial interpretations which drew from philosophical, sociological and historiographical approaches, we were able to anticipate the issues which could be raised in other texts and thus establish a hypothesis for the subsequent literaryscientific research. Our research has also been influenced by the continually evolving nature of gender studies, and we have therefore decided to adopt a somewhat unusual approach in this coursebook and briefly examine some contemporary texts thereby creating an intentional shift in our timeline. The modern works of Z.Kepplová and U. Kovalyk have raised a number of interesting issues, and a study of the interwar work of M. Urban reveals further interpretations on the basis of gender. After this brief overview, we return to the main focus of the study: gender approaches to Slovak literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The study focuses on the complexity of male-female relationships in the work of both male and female authors of realist and modernist literature at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Works by the founding generation of realism and late realism were analysed, with particular attention being paid to the fiction of M. Kukučín, J. Čajak, J. G. Tajovský, J. Jesenský, E. M. Šoltésová, T. Vansová, Ľ. Podjavorinská and B. S. Timrava. The works of H. Gregorová and Ľ. Groeblová were also studied as prime examples of Slovak literary modernism. 

We hope that this bilingual coursebook will allow realist and modernist Slovak fiction, and the Slovak national literary tradition in general, to receive wider critical renown beyond the borders of Slovakia and also to demonstrate its place in contemporary literary theory.

Proceedings of the 13th Scientific Conference of Young Historians, organized by the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice in cooperation with the State Archives in Košice and the Slovak Historical Society at the Slovak Academy of Sciences on 24 October 2023 The central theme of the conference proceedings of the scientific conference of doctoral students is the issue of power as an instance that is an inherent part of human existence and has been present in society de facto since its beginning. Since power and the desire for power are present even today, perhaps more than at any other time in the history of human society, the proceedings provide adequate answers to the questions: where is power born and from what does it originate? How do social science disciplines view those social groups that do not hold power? The publication consists of eight contributions by authors working at Slovak and Czech universities. The volume opens with a paper by Dávid Nykodým on power in the city of silver in the era of Jiří of Poděbrady. The administration of estates in the hands of widows in the 17th century (on the example of Judith Balassa) was discussed by Sabina Danková. The issue of the role of the university grand master in the monopolization of education during the First Empire 1808-1815 in France was examined by Michael Dudzik. The period between the two world wars on the territory of Czechoslovakia was mapped in their contributions by two authors: Simona Bilecová, who characterized the emergence and creation of the political elite on the example of the Rožňava region, and Dominik Šípoš, who evaluated the power of the party as an ideological problem of the Czechoslovak National Democracy. This line was continued by Patrik Beňuš, who analysed in detail the crisis in railway transport in the southern territory of Slovakia after 1938. Monika Tresová dealt with the activities of Catholic associations in Košice and their disappearance under the pressure of the communist power after 1948. Miriama Balvirčáková dealt with the power and its legitimacy, judicial rehabilitation of the victims of the communist regime in Eastern Slovakia in 1968-1971.
