Although chronic non-communicable diseases currently dominate overall morbidity and mortality in developed countries, epidemics of infectious diseases, especially those caused by new or emerging pathogens, occur more frequently and spread faster and further in new territories. The starting factors of this threat are mainly ecological and climatic changes and changes in human demography and behaviour. The growing resistance to ATB is also very serious, as a result of which there is a significant increase in the incidence of infectious diseases and their spread to new geographical locations. Current problems of epidemiology and microbiology in research and clinical practice are mainly focused on rapid detection and subsequent response to diagnosed diseases. The correct diagnosis of an infectious disease is the result of a clinical picture, knowledge of the current epidemiological situation and laboratory confirmation of the etiological agent. The identification of microorganisms allows us to establish the correct definitive diagnosis and subsequent targeted therapy, but also to start immediately with appropriate anti-epidemic measures to control the spread of the infectious agent.

Teaching texts „Praktické cvičenia z lekárskej biológie“ provide the theoretical foundations of microscopy, various microscopic techniques and preparation of microscopic slides in an understandable form. The chapters of the teaching texts contain model questions and tasks from cytology, molecular biology and genetics enabling students to acquire new knowledge from individual thematic areas and provide instructions for the implementation of tasks during laboratory lessons in medical biology. Teaching texts are primarily intended for the practical lessons in the subjects Biológia 1 and Biológia 2 for Slovak students of the first year of General Medicine and the subjects Lekárska biológia and Genetika a regeneratívna medicína for Slovak students of the first and second year of Dental Medicine at P. J. Šafárik University in Košice – Faculty of Medicine.

The Book of Abstracts of the international conference XLVII Days of Medical Biophysics presents a collection of contributions submitted by the conference participants, showcasing original results of their scientific, research, and educational activities in the fields of clinical biophysics and medical informatics. The educational papers address current trends in the application of artificial intelligence and simulation‑based medicine in the modernization of teaching, the integration of biophysics with preclinical and clinical disciplines, and pedagogical principles in medical metrology. The scientific contributions focus on the possibilities of photodynamic therapy, the clinical applicability of laser‑ and ultrasound‑based medical technologies, advanced MRI imaging methods, biosignal acquisition and analysis, clinical proteomics, the use of electron microscopy in tissue studies, novel materials, tissue engineering, and related research areas.

The publication "Fundamentals of Cardiovascular Risk Assessment: Tools and Applications" is the first of its kind in Slovakia. It was created with the aim of providing healthcare professionals, medical students, and anyone interested in the subject with a clear, practical overview of cardiovascular risk. The book presents a global and national picture of mortality, emphasizes the importance of prevention and screening, and introduces the basic principles of risk assessment. Special attention is paid to risk factors and modifiers that can significantly change a patient's prognosis. For a better understanding of the issue, the reader will also find chapters devoted to clinical conditions, an overview of scoring systems, risk categories, and finally practical examples from clinical practice that link theory with everyday medical reality. Our goal is for this book to be not only an educational tool, but also a practical guide for decision-making in clinical practice. We believe that it will contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of cardiovascular risk and at the same time help to strengthen the emphasis on prevention, which remains the most effective tool in the fight against these diseases.
