Ku napísaniu učebnice viedli autorov dve podstatné skutočnosti: Jednak obrovský rozvoj nových materiálov a terapeutických postupov, jednak fakt, že od vydania poslednej učebnice (autor Doc. MUDr. Ján Slávik, CSc.) v roku 1992 uplynulo už viac ako 20 rokov. Vo všeobecnej časti knihy sú uvedené kapitoly, charakterizujúce zubné lekárstvo a jeho miesto v kontexte medicíny, morfológia a histológia zubov a tvrdých zubných tkanív a základné fyziologické poznatky o ústnej dutine. Špeciálna časť publikácie pozostáva z kapitol kariológia, endodoncia, parodontológia a detské zubné lekárstvo. Ako ukazujú prvé skúsenosti, o knihu majú záujem nielen poslucháči, ale aj praktickí stomatológovia, ktorí nemajú čas na štúdium rozsiahlejších monografií. Publikácia tak môže spĺňať aj funkciu repetitória terapeutického zubného lekárstva.
