Although significant progress has been made in the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of patients with advanced colorectal cancer, therapeutic options remain limited, necessitating the discovery of additional markers to serve as prognostic predictors.

This monograph aims to draw the attention of the professional community to the critical role and significance of the TGF-β signaling pathway in the initiation, progression, and treatment of colorectal carcinoma. A substantial portion of the text focuses on lesser-known emerging trends and ongoing clinical trials for colorectal cancer patients.

Táto časť práce poukazuje na význam komunikácie a interakcie medzi lekárom a pacientom a nutnosť zohľadnenia významných vzťahových aspektov medzi nimi. Kapitola sa ďalej venuje psychosomatickému rozmeru vybraných chorôb v kontexte rôznych medicínskych odborov. Zároveň je analyzovaná psychologická problematika pacientov s telesným, zmyslovým postihnutím a duševne zaostalých osôb, záver učebnice predstavuje opis špecifík práce s detským pacientom. Pomocou týchto učebných textov si študenti medicíny majú osvojiť základné psychologické poznatky, získať vedomosti o efektívnej komunikácii s pacientmi, príbuznými a ostatným zdravotníckym personálom, tvorivo pristupovať k riešeniu problémov pri práci. The publication "News in Diabetology and Lipidology" focuses on extremely relevant topics in diabetology and lipidology, reflecting the state of these issues in light of the recommendations from professional societies from 2019. In diabetology, it primarily addresses the intensification of antidiabetic treatment using modern drug classes—specifically, incretin enhancers and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors (gliflozins). Few medical fields have experienced such a development of new pharmacological options as diabetology has in the last two decades. While pharmacotherapy for type 2 diabetes (DM2) was limited to the use of biguanides, sulfonylurea derivatives, and insulin throughout the second half of the last century, recent years have introduced entirely new groups of oral antidiabetics with cardio- and nephroprotective effects. In lipidology, it pertains to the new recommendations from the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) with new treatment goals for serum lipids and lipoproteins, including the use of biological therapies.

This textbook is primarily intended for medical students in doctoral studies and doctoral candidates, as well as for physicians preparing for specialization exams in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetology, metabolic disorders and nutrition, as well as cardiology and angiology. I believe that readers will find information in this publication that will aid them in their studies and translate into their daily clinical practice.

“Pathology Part 2 (summer semester) - Practical lessons for students of dental medicine” represents the second half of the university textbook designed for the pregradual study of pathology. The textbook complements the lectures of pathology and serves as a source of information for students of dental medicine, that are preparing for the practical credit, as well as the final oral examination.

In this part of the “Pathology” series, forty-four selected histopathological slides are presented. Each selected slide is provided with general information in relation to etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, as well as with corresponding morphological features, including the gross appearance and the most important histopathological characteristics. The textbook summarizes the basic concepts of systemic pathology (pathology of the heart, vessels, lungs, gastrointestinal, urogenital system, breast, musculoskeletal, nervous system, skin and infancy) and pathology of the orofacial region, that is logical continuation and completion of general pathology in the first semester.

Nature, as well as the human body, contains an abundant quantity of organic molecules. This textbook describes selected oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen derivatives of hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds of their reactions, which are important in the human body or are found in pharmaceutical active substances, poisons, foodstuffs and heat-treated food. The last part of the textbook describes the isomerism of organic compounds, which enables dynamic changes in the structure of molecules that have different properties. Nature is filled with different plants and animals and is the first laboratory to produce bioactive organic natural compounds. These compounds are compatible with human cells and are applicable as therapeutic medicine. There is an effort to reproduce natural molecules in chemical laboratories, but they cannot be as perfect as the natural ones. Synthetic molecules can serve as a model for multiple studies, but there still does not exist a magic panacea pill or a perfect copy of nature, for the treatment of various diseases. Knowledge about the regenerative and toxic effect of medicinal substances in dependence on their structure (type and number of substituents) is very important for the understanding of their role in modulation of health and disease in dependence on their concentration. Compounds can be used daily only in recommended doses (higher doses can be toxic), but still will not replace a healthy diet. People need a varied diet to be healthy, in which are all necessary nutrients, what Hippocrates demonstrated long ago “Let food be the medicine, and let medicine be the food.” This book is written for students who select bioorganic chemistry subject during the study of general medicine or dentistry as well as for motivated students who would like to practice their knowledge and wish to improve in this subject and for students who would like to learn simplified basic organic reactions with their future application in biochemistry. Learn the simple models mainly through creative simple instruction by using different colours, by repetition, practice by drawing of formulas by hand (at least three times) and memorization of common names of compounds and their reactions which have application in biochemistry. Thus, establishing simple educational methods how to distinguish organic molecules according to the colours of a functional group can promote universal learning for all students who thought that chemistry is a difficult subject, but hopefully they change their opinion after study of this book.

                Vysokoškolská učebnica „Ultrasonografická anatómia 1“ je určená predovšetkým študentom lekárskych fakúlt. Publikácia dopĺňa medzeru na medicínskom literárnom trhu, na ktorom takýto druh literatúry doteraz absentuje. V učebnici sa čitateľ oboznámi s koreláciou anatomického a ultrasonografického obrazu orgánov a štruktúr za fyziologického stavu. Táto korelácia poukazuje na úzke prepojenie teoretického predmetu anatómia s klinickou praxou s ultrasonografickým vyšetrením, ktoré je dnes neoddeliteľnou súčasťou základných vyšetrovacích metód v mnohých medicínskych odboroch.

                Učebnica pozostáva z anatomickej časti, ktorá sa venuje základnému anatomickému popisu jednotlivých orgánov brucha a panvy. Nosnou časťou učebnice je sonografická časť, ktorá popisuje a charakterizuje jednotlivé ultrasonografické snímky. Čitateľ môže priamo porovnať vzhľad a prípadné rozdiely orgánov a štruktúr získaných dvomi úplne odlišnými zobrazeniami.

                Veríme, že nová vysokoškolská učebnica splní očakávania študentov, ako aj všetkých tých, pre ktorých je oblasť ultrasonografického zobrazenia z pohľadu anatóma predmetom záujmu – bude tak prospešná nielen pre anatómov, ale aj pre začínajúcich sonografistov.

Z dôvodu, že študenti uvedených odborov nemajú možnosť kontaktu s reálnymi anatomickými štruktúrami je pre nich výučba predmetu anatómie neatraktívna. Veríme, že predkladaný pracovný zošit so svojimi ilustráciami anatomických štruktúr umožní študentom aktívnejšie sa zapojiť do vyučovacieho procesu, čím sa pre nich predmet anatómie stane prístupnejší a atraktívnejší.

Všeobecná dermatovenerológia je nosnou časťou dermatovenerológie. Morfológia, popis a charakteristika jednotlivých eflorescencií sú kľúčové v diagnostike a diferenciácii kožných ochorení spolu s dobre odobratou anamnézou. Snahou bolo vytvoriť vysokoškolský učebný text, ktorý tvorí praktický návod ako vyšetrovať pacienta s kožným ochorením. Cieľom jednotlivých kapitol je dokonale si osvojiť dermatologickú terminológiu, fyzikálnym vyšetrením vnímať špeciálne kožné znaky a zmeny, vedieť sa orientovať v algoritme pomocných vyšetrovacích metód a testov a pochopiť rozdielne vlastnosti a charakteristiku kože vzhľadom na vek pacienta, vznik, priebeh a trvanie kožných prejavov. Posledná kapitola predstavuje praktickú topografiu kožných ochorení v tabuľkách. Dermatovenerológia patrí k interdisciplinárnym odborom, preto všeobecná dermatológia bude určite dobrým sprievodcom pri diagnostike kožných ochorení nielen študentov medicíny, ale aj lekárov prvého kontaktu a styčných odborov.

The script deals with the issue of harmful alcohol use and its consequences on individuals’ cognitive abilities. The first part is devoted to the diagnosis of dependence syndrome and the assessment of risky drinking according to internationally recognized classifications (ICD, DSM). The following chapters explain the concept of cognition and its main components. Attention is also given to changes in cognitive functions during long-term alcohol abuse. The reader is introduced to the anatomical changes in the brain caused by alcohol. Damage to white matter and disorders of neurotransmission are described. Special focus is placed on diagnoses associated with alcohol use, such as Korsakoff syndrome, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, demyelinating disorders, and hepatic encephalopathy. Attention is also paid to the possibilities of diagnosing cognitive dysfunction. General screening tests such as MMSE or MoCA are presented. More specific tools, such as PHES or BEARNI, are described in greater detail. The script also points out the possibilities of pharmacological treatment. Non-pharmacological approaches, including cognitive remediation therapy and computer-based training, are also discussed. The conclusion is devoted to modern neuromodulation methods, in particular transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation. This university textbook is primarily intended for students of medicine, psychology, and related health sciences.

All histological specimens come from the archive of the Institute of Histology and Embryology, are used in practical exercises, and are also included in teaching presentations. The textbook is designed so that students can find clear explanations of most medical terms and also reinforce their knowledge of professional terminology in Latin. An advantage of the electronic textbook is the ability to enlarge microscopic photographs, allowing detailed observation of structures without any qualitative loss of the viewed image. The microphotographs used in the atlas were taken with the following equipment: Zeiss Promicra and Olympus BX50 with a Canon EOS 2000D digital camera and QP Industrial 3.2 software.
