Ekologická etika ako typ aplikovanej etiky sa orientuje: 1. problémovo – poukazuje na konkrétne problémové oblasti poškodzovania prírody, napr. toxické odpady, kyslé dažde a i., riešia sa zložité prepojenia etických, technických, ekonomických a politických otázok, otázok medzinárodného práva a bezpečnosti; alebo sa fundament ekologických problémov odhaľuje ako: 2. odcudzenie človeka od hlbokých koreňov bytia, od biotopu, od vlastnej prirodzenosti, od existenčného habitatu, resp. zodpovednosti voči svetu prírody atď. Tu vystupuje do popredia požiadavka inkrementálneho rozšírenia morálky – pozornosť sa sústreďuje na problematiku rozšírenej etizácie a hodnotovej autonómie všetkých fragmentov biosféry (diskusie o možnostiach proprírodnej axiológie). Tretí typ koncepcií odkrýva príčinu ekologickej krízy: 3. v prevládajúcich postojoch moderného Západu k prírode; ich cieľom je vybudovať od základu nové axiologické, ontologické a etické východiská reflektujúce alternatívne postoje voči prírode.

The textbook Basic Concepts of Morphology is an introduction to morphology intended for undergraduate students of British and American Studies and students of English (and French/German) for European Institutions and Economy and other philology studies in Slovakia. The textbook gradually guides students from key terms to concepts and from there to theoretically more challenging phenomena. The textbook is primarily for Slovak students of English, which explains that the majority of the examples presented are English. As the textbook progresses, data from Slovak, German, French, Hungarian and sometimes from slightly more exotic languages are given. It is expected that such an approach will prepare students for carrying out morphological analysis independently.

The Textbook is based on the output of the twelveth year of the student scientific conference held in December 2023. Filozofické dielo najvýznamnejšieho českého filozofia 20. storočia Jana Patočku (1907–1977) vyniká jedinečnou mysliteľkou originalitou. Už v dobe svojho vzniku veľmi výrazne prekračovalo úzke hranice dobového česko-slovenského duchovného priestoru a neopakovateľným spôsobom spojilo našu krajinu s najvyspelejšími filozofickými učeniami západného myslenia, v ktorom hrali dominantnú úlohu Husserlova fenomenológia a Heideggerova fundamentálna ontológia. Zaiste, bolo by veľkou chybou, pokiaľ by sme však chceli redukovať rozhodujúcu pozíciu Patočkovej filozofickej tvorby len na recepciu a kriticko-tvorivé domýšľanie Husserlovej a Heideggerovej filozofie. V tejto súvislosti nemôžeme v nijakom prípade vynechať najmä rozhodujúci podiel Eugena Finka, ktorý uviedol Patočku do tajov Husserlovej a Heideggerovej filozofie. Obidvaja myslitelia potom celoživotne pokračovali v neustálom tvorivom filozofickom dialógu. Ale nemožno tiež nespomenúť Patočkov intenzívny záujem aj o diela Schelera, Ingardena, Landgrebeho, ale tiež aj Sartra a ďalších.

The canon of American literature has undergone constant revision with many authors who were long excluded from wider recognition now being accepted as significant figures. With the emergence of postcolonial and ethnic studies after the 1960s, the diversity of the literary canon has become greater than ever, and we can now see American literature as remarkably distinctive in this respect. The question of how to define ethnicity and how far an immigrant should go to preserve their ethnic heritage have always been addressed by writers, together with larger issues such as the definition of national identity and national literature, and where we should draw the lines between local and global identities. We understand that a single course in American ethnic literature cannot hope to answer all these complex questions, but we firmly believe that discussing these questions in classes can help us to be more understanding and tolerant of ethnic diversity. For this reason, the main aim of this textbook is to provide an interdisciplinary introduction to American ethnic literatures with an emphasis on their historical and cultural background, to expand students’ knowledge of American literatures and cultures at the master’s level and familiarize them with specific features of ethnic literatures in the contemporary USA. The textbook contains information on Native American, African American, Asian American, Jewish American, and Hispanic American literature, history and culture.

The work deals with the evolution in theory and practice of democracy, open society and humanism which is marked by dichotomy of its own progressive and regressive features. Civilization trajectory of human reality, the implementation strategy thought overlaps through a reality in the form of freedom, solidarity and human rights, formulation of normative ideas of man and his/her nature, rationalistic universalism and voluntaristic individualism created preconditions for the political background of modern societies which established democratic order with rules allowing to dispose with freedom to which the individual, as a rational being, is authorized. Moreover, the perspective of awareness of ambiguity and paradoxical content of individual parameters of democracy, open society and humanism, ideologically shaped and fixed by worldviews of economic and political elites, from our point of view, is a mirror image of how those conditions differ from the standard assumptions formulated in theory.

Cieľom predkladanej monografie je predovšetkým čo najkomplexnejšie predstaviť Patočkov koncept filozofie dejín, aj keď si uvedomujem, že to vôbec nie je ľahká úlo-ha, nielen preto, ako už bolo spomenuté, že v súčasnosti neexistuje rozsiahlejšia a vyčerpávajúca práca k tejto téme. Existuje síce pomerne veľké množstvo štúdií , venovaných Patočkovmu konceptu filozofie dejín, žiadna z nich však neskúma tento koncept komplexným pohľadom, ako určitý celok – zväčša sú zamerané na niektoré parciálne problémy (a nie je ich málo), vyplývajúce z tohto konceptu. Aj tento fakt, mimochodom, je pre mňa samého dôkazom toho, že ide jednoznačne o veľmi náročnú tému.

The publication „Helping professions and self-care from the perspective of psychology and social work“ includes research studies focused on self-care, and the positive and negative effects of helping among specific groups of helping professionals – psychologists and social workers.

A number of Slovak as well as foreign authors contributed to the book of proceedings. The contributions are theoretical studies, research studies and case studies. The theoretical and research studies are focused on important issues of professional helping: self-care, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, burnout, perceived stress, secondary traumatic stress, mindfulness, empathy, job satisfaction and turnover among psychologists and social workers.

Research interest in the phenomena is especially important in the context of the mental health of helping professionals and in reducing the negative consequences of helping.

The proposed anthology represents for many doctoral students their first entry into the publishing environment of scientific genres. The studies in such cases contain the essence of future dissertation works, which represent the creative pinnacle of doctoral studies. In addition to providing doctoral students with the opportunity to publish scientific outputs, we also consider the anthology a space for interdisciplinary encounters and mutual enrichment. However, interdisciplinarity is not merely a characteristic of the anthology as a whole but also of some studies.

Most notable interdisciplinary approaches are observed in literary studies. The traditional subject of research into artistic texts is enriched in individual studies by examining theatrical and film works (Peter Getlík), linguistic aspects of phrasemes (Ivana Hudiková), musical elements (Terézia Kulíková), visual art (Dominika Petáková), and digital spaces of new media (Alexandra Popovičová). From other disciplines, we highlight Miroslava Süčová Vernarská’s study, which extends psychological research into sociological and linguistically communicative contexts (the concept of metaphor), or conversely, Zuzana Šoltésová and Dušan Šlosár’s contribution, analyzing eating disorders from their disciplinary background in social work.

Both mentioned disciplines also include contributions with traditional research subjects. Nikola Fabiny from psychology analyzes consequence expectations in the context of goal selection and achievement. Jana Plavnická and Dušan Šlosár’s co-authored study from the Department of Social Work presents a multi-perspective analysis of integration barriers for immigrants in Slovakia. Within their own disciplines, both philosophy contributions operate: Juraj Brenišin interprets the ethical aspects of Avicbron’s Fons vitæ, while Michal Kručko examines Edmund Husserl’s unfinished work through a comparative lens of his students Jan Patočka and Roman Ingarden. The anthology concludes with Lukáš Lukačín’s study (written in English), which explores the semantic-grammatical category of modality in the verbs MAY and CAN within legal-administrative documents of the European Union.

The representation of academic disciplines and doctoral students’ individual creative outputs in Doktorandské miscelaneá 4 is thus appropriately diverse. We present this publication to the broader academic community as a representative overview of trends in young scholars’ thinking across the spectrum of humanities and social sciences doctoral programs at the Faculty of Arts, UPJŠ in Košice.

The current time is fast, hasty, with strongly asserted women's emancipation, absorbed by information and communication technologies that overcome distances but create them at the same time. The lifestyle of humans is changing, many diseases are on the rise, and cancer is becoming a "trend of the present". Claims on man, and especially on women, are now too great. Women perform multiple roles and perform many tasks. They become caregiving mothers, understanding and surrendered wives, workers with professionalism and flexibility, and idols the myth of beauty too. Due to the overlapping of the traditional gender division of labor, the life of women takes place on several levels. Their work day does not end when they leave the job, but they continue to care for their household and their own family. Besides all, they strive to fulfill not only personal expectations, but also the expectations of the family, social environment and society, reject failure and strive for perfectionism.

In our lives, situations that affect and burden us more or less appear. Even though we can not in control everything and everyone, we are able to control situations that are of direct concern to us. In life, we encounter problems in employment, financial problems, illness or death of near. As well as negative, also positive situations affect us. Each responds to each situation different ways.

Monograph is one of the ways in which we aim to draw attention to the so "C-coping style" as a maladaptive way of managing the burden that is typical of oncological ill patients. It is one of the possible concepts that affect the manifestation of breast cancer. Based on this, we have focused on the used coping strategies and we consider the life events to be a significant burden in the lives of cancer patients. The research is aimed at synthesizing the life events and the coping strategies used to coping them, conceived as a risk behavior of patients with breast cancer. As the coping of the burden can be different between men and women, the monograph is intended predominantly for women, to which we have also focused in realized research. They can be patients with oncological diagnosis, but also women who want to prevent this disease by use effective coping life events. We also believe that the monograph will enrich everyone who is interested in the same target group.

Dejiny antického Grécka a Ríma sú kulmináciou úspechov, ktoré dosiahli staroveké civilizácie v politickej, hospodárskej a spoločenskej sfére, v poznaní človeka a sveta a v umení. Gréci ako prví v dejinách ľudstva dokázali vytvoriť systém, v ktorom určitá časť spoločnosti – plnoprávni občania, mala možnosť slobodne rozhodovať o politickom a dianí, mohli voliť a byť zvolení do úradov rámci daného politického systému a mali právo diskutovať o otázkach dotýkajúcich sa života komunity. Vysoký stupeň vzdelanosti a hľadanie racionálneho vysvetlenia prírodných javov, umožnili Grékom dosiahnuť úroveň poznania, ku ktorej sa európske národy dopracovali až v novoveku. Úspechy Grékov v sochárstve, architektúre i v literatúre sú dodnes inšpiráciou. Napriek odstupu viac než dvoch tisícročí sú nám svojim myslením a konaním blízki, rozumieme ich víťazstvám i porážkam a sú v mnohom zdrojom poučenia aj dnes.
Demokracia bola určujúcim princípom aj Rímskej republiky a významným predpokladom úspechu Ríma v zápolení vládu nad Itáliou a postupne celým Stredomorím. I keď vznik Rímskej ríše možno charakterizovať ako výsledok dobyvačných vojen, Rimania dokázali integrovať odlišné kultúry a pretvoriť komunity, ktoré sa nachádzali na rôznom stupni vývoja do spoločenstva národov, založeného na unifikovanom hospodárskom a právnom základe, umožňujúcom slobodu pohybu a výmenu ideí v Stredomorí i za jeho hranicami. Práca je koncipovaná ako učebná pomôcka, ktorá prístupnou formou poskytuje informácie o zlomových udalostiach dejín antického Grécka a Ríma. Pozornosť je venovaná aj stručnej charakteristike významných osobností a ich miesta v historickom dianí. V základných rysoch je načrtnutý hospodársky vývoj antickej spoločnosti a faktory ktoré ho podmieňovali. V závere sú analyzované príčiny úpadku a zániku Rímskeho impéria. Práca je doplnená zoznamom literatúry, ktorá je dostupná v Štátnej vedeckej knižnici v Košiciach a na Katedre dejín FF UPJŠ. V zozname literatúry sú uvedené aj internetové zdroje.

The proceedings maps three significant events organised in 2018 – 2019 within the project KEGA No. 008UPJŠ-4/2017 Science without barriers (Interdisciplinary inspirations of contemporary literary scholarship and linguistics in university educational practice; principal investigator prof. PhDr. J. Gbúr, CSc.) at the Department of Slovak Studies, Slavonic Philologies and Communication, Faculty of Arts, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.

The first activity was a scholarly and artistic symposium Science without barriers held in March 6 – 8, 2019 on the occassion of the 80^th birthday of Dr. h. c. prof. PhDr. Ján Sabol, DrSc. It brought extended abstracts of participants in two sections (Slovak studies and literary scholarship in interdisciplinary contexts) as its outcome. The next two parts describe artistically oriented events: Interpretational afternoon (a competition for the best interpretation of Ján Sabol´s book of verse Love in Blue) with the winning works added, and the vernissage Literature through an objective lens with the share of students of the School of Industrial Visual Arts in Košice.

The presented monograph deals with various views on of the community issue and community work, with which  area of social work or other helping professions is closely connected. It offers theoretical analysis as a basic theoretical framework of the issue, which is necessary to know in the study and in the performance of the practice in the helping profession. The authors consider community work to be one of the possibilities for fully involving the inhabitants in co-responsible decision-making on things that fundamentally affect their lives.

The monograph characterizes in  fifteen chapters the community and the processes that takes place in it, outlines a brief history and approaches in community work. It offers theoretical background, which is used in community work as a necessary prerequisite for a professional approach practice. The monograph also points to the important position of professional help in community.
