Caves have always been very specific places throughout history. In some cultures, they served as sites for sacrifices or remembrance, while in others, they were seen as places where one could cross to the "other side of life." People used caves for shelter, as places to leave messages, to wait out bad weather, and in some cases, even lived in them. During wars in our region, entire families or villages would hide from enemies in caves, or they would use them to conceal weapons.

Today, in most countries, caves are destinations for tourists who want to experience something new and unknown: darkness, high humidity, and the fascinating beauty of underground formations. They are also sought after by cavers who long to explore caves, enter worlds where no human has set foot before, find evidence of previous habitation, or conduct research that continually advances our knowledge.

In the publication you are holding, we present both traditional and less conventional topics about the formation of karst and caves, selected ecological aspects, maps and their creation, significant caves of the world, and the life of people in such areas. We also offer an overview of important karst locations that are definitely worth learning more about or visiting in person. Overweight as a risk factor for the development of civilization diseases and urogenital dysfunctions

Overweight and obesity represent a significant risk factor for the development of several diseases of civilisation, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and various forms of cancer. They also contribute significantly to urogenital dysfunctions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and pelvic organ prolapse. Mechanisms that link excess weight to these dysfunctions include increased intra-abdominal pressure, hormonal changes, and chronic inflammatory processes that negatively affect the structure and function of the urogenital system. Prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity are therefore crucial not only in terms of reducing the risk of civilization diseases, but also in improving the quality of life through the prevention and treatment of urogenital dysfunctions.

Proceedings of the Scientific Conference with International Participation held on November 28, 2014, in Košice

Social work is among the helping professions that can be considered highly risky from various perspectives. The clientele utilizing social services is very diverse, often consisting of individuals in extreme life situations. It is typical for help to be sought only when the client is at rock bottom. Along with other factors, this can lead to the emergence of various risky situations. The proceedings were created within the framework of the VEGA task No. 1/0332/12 titled Analysis of Selected Risk Factors of Client Violence in Social Work with an Emphasis on Prevention of Client Violence and Preparation of Social Workers - National Mapping of the Occurrence of Client Violence Against Social Workers in Slovakia. The thematic focus of the proceedings is broader, as client violence is only one of many risks in social work. In the proceedings, the reader will find 52 articles that address the riskiness of social work from many perspectives. They offer an interesting overview of theoretical foundations as well as research findings. The numerous thematic contributions indicate that the issue of risk in social work is highly relevant and that attention is paid to it in both theory and practice.

Publikace představuje moderní odbornou učebnici jednoho ze základních oborů lékařství. Po devíti letech byla zcela přepracována a aktualizována prakticky ve všech svých částech.

Podrobnou a didakticky vytříbenou obrazově bohatou učebnici využijí nejen pregraduální studenti, ale i lékaři v předatestační přípravě, kteří budou hledat informace o fyziologických pochodech v organizmu. Mimořádně cenný je velký rozsah obrazové dokumentace, v naprosté většině barevné – kniha obsahuje 530 obrázků a schémat a 45 tabulek.

Publikace pokračuje v dlouhodobé tradici a navazuje na řadu opakovaně vydávaných učebnic autorského kolektivu Fyziologického ústavu 1. LF UK. Rozsahem a kvalitou podobná domácí učebnice na našem knižním trhu v současné době není a je tak v podstatě jedinou moderní učebnicí, která plně odpovídá sylabům lékařské fyziologie na českých lékařských fakultách.

Publishing in open access is becoming a standard in Europe and Slovakia. The costs of scientific communication represent a significant item within science expenditures.

A substantial portion of these expenses comes from the state budget or the European Commission, i.e., from public funds. In this analysis, we used data from the Web of Science database to estimate the total amount and structure of resources (in terms of paying institutions, receiving publishers, and journal titles) that authors from Slovak research institutions likely spent on scientific publishing in open access journals (APC fees) in 2021.

The content of the book publication Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Continuity consists of contributions from two events organized by the Department of Slovak Studies, Slavic Philologies, and Communication at the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice during its short existence.

The first event was a scientific seminar held on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of P. J. Šafárik, titled Pavol Jozef Šafárik – Scientist and Artist, which took place on January 27–28, 2012, in Košice and Kobeliarovo. The second event was an internal scientific seminar on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of Šafárik’s birth, held on December 15, 2015, under the title In the Quiet Home Circle. Symbolically—beginning with death and ending with birth (thus indicating the living continuity of Šafárik’s research legacy)—we aim to continue the study of Pavol Jozef Šafárik’s scientific work and increasingly involve the youngest generation of researchers (represented by doctoral students of the department in the field of literary studies). This is despite the fact that the literature on the life and work of this scholar and poet, who stood at the birth of Slavic studies, is very rich, and most of his works have already been scientifically analyzed. However, it appears that even seemingly outdated views of Šafárik still deserve scientific attention in the new context of humanities and natural sciences, as can be read in the contributions published in this volume.

Through the continuous publication of the Collected Works of Pavol Jozef Šafárik, both mentioned seminars, and the publication of this volume, the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice has continued the activities of the Prešov Faculty of Arts from the time before its separation from the union of faculties of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice in 1997. The selection and arrangement of contributions in the volume symbolize the "passing of the baton" in research and publishing activities related to Pavol Jozef Šafárik—a scientific personality of global stature, who in 1959 gave his name to our university.

Publikace se zabývá problematikou intenzivní péče v porodní asistenci a přináší ucelený přehled z oblasti jak akutní gynekologické péče, tak akutní péče porodnické, a to z pohledu práce porodních asistentek a sester na jednotce intenzivní péče gynekologie a porodnictví.

První, nosná část, se zabývá vymezením koncepce oboru intenzivní péče v porodní asistenci, organizací, kvalitou, hygienicko-epidemiologickým režimem, zdravotnickými přístroji, etickými aspekty a komunikací na jednotkách intenzivní péče s nemocnou a rodinnými příslušníky. Část této kapitoly je také věnována problematice septických stavů, terminologii a patofyziologii, prevenci septických stavů.

Druhá část pojednává o problematice specifik intenzivní péče o ženy s gynekologickým onemocněním v předoperační a pooperační péči se zaměřením na diagnostické metody, monitorování, zajištění a péče o invazivní vstupy, výživu v intenzivní péči, oxygenoterapii a umělou plicní ventilaci, eliminační metody včetně komplexní péče o ženu v intenzivní péči. Kapitola se také věnuje onkologické problematice spojené s intenzivní péčí, včetně smrti.

Třetí část je zaměřena na oblast intenzivní péče o ženu v těhotenství, během porodu a v šestinedělí. Jednotlivé podkapitoly se zaměřují na péči o ženu s HELLP syndromem, eklampsií a život ohrožujícím krvácením.

Pooperační nevolnost a zvracení (PONV) patří v časné pooperační péči mezi nejčastější komplikace, které vedle subjektivního diskomfortu mají řadu fyziologických a metabolických následků a rovněž mohou významně prodloužit rekonvalescenci a hospitalizaci pacienta. I přes dostupnost vysoce účinných antiemetik je výskyt PONV neakceptovatelně vysoký a u rizikových pacientů po operačních výkonech dosahuje až 80 %.
Tato kniha podává komplexní přehled o problematice PONV, od patofyziologie až po současné možnosti prevence a léčby, přičemž uvedené postupy reflektují nejnovější vědecké poznatky a doporučení. Důraz je kladen především na identifikaci rizikových pacientů a možnosti farmakologické profylaxe. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována problematice PONV u dětí, u kterých je situace komplikována identifikací nevolnosti již v nejnižší věkové kategorii.
Kniha je určena nejen anesteziologům, ale může být užitečným pomocníkem pro lékaře všech specializací, kteří o pacienty po výkonech v celkové anestezii pečují. Řada informací bude užitečná i pro sestry, neboť ošetřovatelská péče je v managementu PONV nepostradatelná.

University textbook Selected Chapters from Managerial Ethics presents selected topics from the current issue of Managerial Ethics.

The historical context of Managerial Ethics and its formation on the background of business ethics, up to the form of independent inter and trans discipline, is presented at the introduction. Being one of the subdisciplines of applied ethics, it is inherently normative and interdisciplinary. It represents an overlapping institutional aspect - management ethics and individual aspect - manager ethics. The issue of social responsibility in economics and business, or the moral profile of a manager as a key player of this applied ethics is mentioned.

Institutionalization and implementation of ethics in corporate culture and the tools that are used in this so complex and interdisciplinary process are also a necessary step. Established ethical management systems, which complement the modularity of institutionalization, are also important. The main question is, of course, ethics in decision-making and management of people, as it is where ethical dilemmas and tensions are born. Also, the issue of ethics in leadership, as another qualitative and developmental stage in Managerial Ethics, is the contribution.

The attached moral dilemmas are meant to reflect, self-test moral intelligence and to be resolved.

Závěrem každého případu je poučení pro čtenáře, jak by měli ideálně v obdobných situacích jednat. 
Autorka vychází ze svých zkušeností dlouholetého pracovníka ve zdravotnictví a ze zkušeností, kterých nabyla v životě jako pacientka či rodinný příslušník pacienta. Zároveň čtenářům přibližuje některá témata související s činností zdravotnických zařízení, o kterých se zpravidla zásadně veřejně nehovoří. Ačkoliv je většina kapitol smutným obrazem českého zdravotnictví, má kniha za cíl povzbudit čtenáře, že svým aktivním postojem dokážou lépe čelit všemu, co může v jejich životech při komunikaci se zdravotníky nastat.
