“Pathology Part 2 (summer semester) - Practical lessons for students of dental medicine” represents the second half of the university textbook designed for the pregradual study of pathology. The textbook complements the lectures of pathology and serves as a source of information for students of dental medicine, that are preparing for the practical credit, as well as the final oral examination.

In this part of the “Pathology” series, forty-four selected histopathological slides are presented. Each selected slide is provided with general information in relation to etiology and pathogenesis of the disease, as well as with corresponding morphological features, including the gross appearance and the most important histopathological characteristics. The textbook summarizes the basic concepts of systemic pathology (pathology of the heart, vessels, lungs, gastrointestinal, urogenital system, breast, musculoskeletal, nervous system, skin and infancy) and pathology of the orofacial region, that is logical continuation and completion of general pathology in the first semester.

The surgical practice starts with detailed knowledge of anatomy. Even if anatomy of human body has not changed over the time, perfection and precision of surgical practice require precise knowledge of anatomical structures, their location, and topographical relationships. Everyone should be aware of the occurrence of possible variations as well. 

A prospective medical doctor should not rely on knowledge gained by studying models, schemes, and pictures, but should combine two types of learning: visual and didactic. Wide array of the visual learning development, considering vision alone, and a detailed and realistic approach to difficult access to structures of the human body are important precursors that create sufficient and quality knowledge needed for clinical practice and appropriate professional development. 

This publication maps all of the clinically significant and difficult approached areas of the head that are not normally prepared for practical exercises in anatomy because of the time and difficulties with the preparation. The colorful, detailed photodocumentation enriched by schemes and followed by procedure guide provides a view of structures until now only poorly documented. We sincerely hope that this monograph will fill the gap in medical literature offered in the market at present time.

Choroby ústnych slizníc a jazyka boli značne dlhý čas doménou všeobecnej medicíny, najmä otorinolaryngológie, dermatológie, internej medicíny, onkológie a ďalších disciplín. Tento fakt do istej miery vysvetľuje rôznorodosť chorobných stavov, ktoré odbornej verejnosti autorský kolektív v tejto odbornej publikácii predkladá. Zosúladiť dokumentačný materiál z chorôb ústnych slizníc tak, aby slúžil na vzdelávacie účely, bola značne náročná práca. Dokumentačné prvky predkladané autorským kolektívom pochádzajú z takmer polstoročnej praxe odborníkov a špecialistov z bratislavských a košických stomatologických kliník. Jednotná klasifikácia chorôb ústnych slizníc nie je doteraz presne definovaná, sú však k dispozícii samostatné chorobné stavy, ktoré sa v klinickej praxi úspešne používajú. Rôzni autori preto vypracovali klasifikácie pre eflorescencie, ako sú ulcerácie, biele plochy, farebné zmeny a pod.

Vyšetrenie jazyka jednou z naj­starších vyšetrovacích metód v klinickej praxi. Jazyk je ako súčasť ústnej dutiny dobre prístupný vyšetreniu, čo zvyšuje jeho diag­nostický význam. Pohľad na jazyk a posúdenie jeho stavu tvorilo základ umenia celých generácií bývalých lekárov. Diagnostika na základe vyšetrenia jazyka sa spomína v kódexoch čínskej medicíny už 3000 rokov pred n. l. Obdobný prístup presadzoval aj Hippokrates, zakladateľ medicíny ako vedeckého odboru.

Táto monografia komplexne zahŕňa lokálnu pato­lógiu jazyka aj jeho zmeny pri celkových ochoreniach. Kniha je príspevkom ku zvy­šovaniu všeobecno-medicínskej úrovne zubných lekárov, no aj kolegov z ďalších medicínskych odborov. Recenzenti odporúčajú monografiu ako vysokoškolský učebný text.
