The submitted college textbook represents basic knowledge from biochemistry and is intended primarily for bachelor study programs (e.g. nursing, physiotherapy, public health). The book represents a simplified alternative for medical biochemistry, with both its content and scope being more suitable for students of non-medical study fields. It explains the elementary metabolic processes occurring in the human body, and in addition, it also offers a brief overview of the clinico-biochemical parameters normally examined when a disorder is suspected. The book aims to provide the students, especially of nonmedical study programs, with the basics of medical and clinical biochemistry and to familiarize them to the appropriate extent with the most common methods used in a biochemical laboratory. It wants to contribute to the deepening of knowledge about the metabolism of both healthy and sick people, or more precisely about clinico-biochemical diagnostic procedures and laboratory examinations, as well as possibly spark an interest in future education. We will be glad if it serves not only as a background material for preparation for the exam but will be an inspiration for the realization of diploma theses focused on the research area of clinical biochemistry or laboratory medicine.
