Abstrakt: The issue of national minorities and ethnic groups is the subject of debates and discussions, often in connection with their legal status in individual states. In the majority of cases, both the national minority and the ethnic group are not distinguished in both legal documents and professional literature. We believe that the reason may be the ambiguity and complexity of the definition of the two terms. However, the need for at least partial definition is reinforced in some cases by a different approach to legal protection and the status of these groups and minorities. The primary aim of our contribution is to point out different approaches to the definition of national minorities and ethnic groups at international and national level. We use scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction and comparison.
